Why are some Classical albums in local library not shown in the Composer’s Discography? [Ticket In]

I have 3 identified albums of Gustav Holst - The Planets in my library.

If I use Composer view - Compositions , I see all 3 Compositions/Albums:

If I use Album view - Gustav holst - Discography - I only see 1 of the 3 identified albums (and 1 album with 1 part (track) of the composition:

This is just 1 example, I have more Classical albums in my library that are not showing in Artist - Discography.

Anybody any idea what to look for to make these albums appear in Album view. Or at least understand why some albums are presented, and others not.
I have checked for differences in Album artist, Artist, Credits, … but no sigar.

Hey @Dirk_De_Taey,

Thanks for writing in and sharing your report!

A few thoughts around this - as you probably already know, albums in your library show all albums you have added to your library, regardless of whether they are properly identified or matched.

Albums in Discography are pulled from Roon’s metadata providers (e.g., TiVo) and present a curated list of an artist’s work, focusing on well-identified and widely available releases.

There is potential that the missing albums in Discography are associated with only partial metadata, such as “Various Artists” or by the conductor/ensemble instead of the composer. If the metadata for one of your albums doesn’t perfectly match Roon’s database, it may not appear in the Composer’s Discography,

When you open the album and click on the three dots (...) > Edit Album > Identify Album and use Roon to search for and confirm the proper match for the album, can you confirm the metadata is is correctly attributed to Holst?

Are the metadata tags on the tracks corresponding to “The Planets” properly attributed as part of the composition as well?

In Composer View > “The Planets,” select the composition and click the ... > View Performances are there any tracks missing?

Lastly, have you tried manually re-identifying the missing album to match it with an entry from Roons database?

Thank you!

Hi Benjamin

Thnaks for your input and questions. In fact, I believe your last question nails the problem. Unfortunately not the solution.

Let me explain, sorry but long reply.

In compositions view, all my 3 albums are shown:

If I now do a deep dive in the 1st album - with Sir Colin Davis as Conductor.

Roon shows 3 versions of this album: my local copy - download from Bowers & Wilkins Society of Sound Music (unfortunately stopped years ago) and 2 albums at Qobuz.
I can only find 2 differences: my local copy is 48 kHz/24bit , Qobuz albums 96/24.
Also Product Code/Catalog numbers are different.

No differences in Credits, neitehr at Album level, nor at Track level …

At track level, no differences either

However, the Identification shows 2 different albums without the option choosing an alternative one:

If I now add the Qobuz album to My Library, identification shows this:

My local copy identification shows this:

At this level, looks identical to the Qobuz one, but at the details:

It is definitely using different metadata, as it says : LSO Live CD version, and 2 tracks (5 & 7) have different (wrong) lenth.

Now if I would be able to select the metadata used for the Qobuz album, I am convinced problem would be solved. But I do not have that option.

To summarize: Correct metadata is available to Roon, but for some reason not accessible as a choice in the identification process.
If I only could find the reason for this …

Thanks for your support

Dirk

Hi @Dirk_De_Taey,

Thanks for the follow-up!

The best next step here would be to have our team attempt to reproduce this behavior in-house. To best attempt this, it might be helpful to have the file(s) for testing on our end as well, can please upload them here and let us know?

Thank you!

Hi Benjamin

local copy of Holst - The Planets uploaded as requested.

Thanks for your support. Dirk

Thanks for sending those over @Dirk_De_Taey - we have a ticket in with the team for further investigation. We’ll follow up with more information this week! :+1:

Hi @Dirk_De_Taey,

Just one further clarification for Devs - for your local copy, do you have the “Live” field toggled to prefer Roon or prefer file? This is at the bottom of the Edit Album tab in the Album Editor dialog window.

Roon preferred selected

Hi @Dirk_De_Taey ,

Hope you’ve been well during this holiday season. I wanted to touch base with some good news, which is that our QA team has been able to reproduce this behavior and we have a ticket in for the issue where composers view and discography view do not match as expected.

As per standard operating procedure, I cannot comment on timelines, but thanks again for bringing this to our attention, now that there is a ticket in, I am hopeful we are on the right path toward a resolution. I will go ahead and close this thread that the ticket is in, but should any additional questions arise, we will reopen the thread, thanks!
