Wicked fast little monster

Having recently relocated and left my original Roon Server with the rest of my household contents awaiting a container I decided to assemble a new mini-itx based server. It was a good opportunity to look at what’s out there and spec something that could provide sufficient grunt but also be relatively energy efficient.

Having assembled the server, installed Arch Linux, added Roon Server and two hard drives I had to re-import and re-analyse my library from scratch (I forgot to bring along a copy my old Roon database). My entire library was imported and analyzed in four days…no mean feat for some 350k tracks.

Here’s what went into the server:

  • Lian Li PC-Q25B case (in hindsight the Q26 is a much better case)
  • Seasonic G450 450W 80+ Gold Certified PSU
  • Asrock Z270M-ITX/AC S1151 mITX Intel Z270
  • Intel Core i5-7600T
  • HyperX FURY 16 GB DDR4 2400 MHz Memory Kit (2 x 8 GB)
  • Samsung 960 EVO M.2-2280
  • 2 x WD Red 6TB NAS drives

Interacting with my library via iPad Pro or iPhone 7 is instantaneous. Very, very happy with the outcome.

What was your total cost?

£1088.37 via Amazon.co.uk. First time in very many years I pay retail for a build, but hey, I’m new and I was in a hurry.
