Will database backup connect to music files on a different streamer's SSD

Hi!

I am moving my server from a Nucleus to a new streamer where I will be able to continue to use Roon. I am copying the music files now.

Over the last couple of years, I have made several updates and additions to the metadata for various albums, songs, etc.

My concern is, will the backup copy of the database from the Nucleus (that has all my metadata changes) find the files on the new products SSD?

The file path on the Nucleus for the music files was: Data → Storage → Internal Storage → Roon Imports → Tims-iMac → music files.

The file path on the new streamer is: music → Music → Roon Imports → Tims-iMac → music files.

When I install the database backup from my Nucleus onto the new streamer, will the metadata in the database connect to the music files?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Tim

Thanks for the prompt reply and for reminding me to listen to Dirty again!

What I was not clear about when I read this page is whether the different directory paths would trip things up. Is that in there somewhere and I am too unlearned to see it?

Thanks much, Tim

In step 1, copy the music files too the new storage. Then delete the old storage paths in Roon.

In step 2, create the backup.

In step 3, restore the backup on the new server. (Note that this backup doesn‘t know about the old storage paths)

In step 4, configure the storage path on the new machine.

This way, the new Roon never sees the old paths. This is critical as it says:

And it can never do wrong with Dirty

Thanks much for highlighting the fourth step.

To that end, I poked around on the new streamer in that Storage tab in Roon Settings, and I could not find folders called “music”, “Music”, or “Roon Imports”. Let me know if this means this task is doomed.

The default is named the same as the default for the internal SSD was on the Nucleus, “Music Folder”. There are a few preinstalled files in the “Music” directory, and those do show up in the under Home in Roon.

The directory path is the same beginning with “Roon Imports”, so I am hoping the database grabs at that point. It is those files that have the metadata changes that I made.

Let me know if all this means this project is doomed to fail.

I appreciate your help. It would be sweet if this worked because the metadata changes were a chore.

“JC” and “Youth Against Facism” pull me back to Dirty about once a year. That was a while ago when I still could hear tones over 8kHz! Saw the tour, wore out the shirt.

Did you click Add Folder? Please post a screenshot of what you are seeing.

Moved to Support .

Here are some screenshots . . .

First, here is the directory structure on the new machine. By dragging and dropping files into Roon on the new machine, I saw the imports go into the “Tims-iMac” folder. The new streamer indexes into the database every music file in the “Music” folder.

In Settings → Storage in Roon, the internal storage is labeled “Music Folder.”

When I hit “Add Folder” in this interface, I am unable to find any of the directories in the path that shows in the Finder for where the music files end up. I drilled down to the end point of each folder, and did not find “music”," Music", or “Roon Imports”, etc. I tried this both with the Music Folder enabled and disabled. I have it disabled right now because I am still copying files into the Tims-iMac folder.

Here is the default location, root, when you open the Add Folder window, in case this is of value.

I am nearly finished dragging and dropping the music files from the Nucleus into the Tims-iMac folder on the new machine. I will deleted the files I added through drag-n-drop. Then I will install the last backup I did of the Nucleus on the new machine and change the Roon Server from the Nucleus to the new machine. The hope is the database finds the music files and so the metadata applies to them.

Let me know if this provides any insights. Thanks for your help.

We have a happy wrap up post. Once the music files were copied onto the internal SSD of the new machine, I loaded the database backup and, presto, it worked – all the metadata connected to the music files. This means I do not have to recreate the many changes and additions I made over the last two-plus years.

It would be sweet if the metadata was embedded into the music file. Maybe in the future this will happen with Roon.

But for now I am set.

Thank you, @Suedkiez, for your pointers.
