Description Of Issue

I do work for several different clients. I need to connect to their system via VPN. I have at least 3 different VPN clients on my Win10 computer. Today I was listening to music on my Sonos using Win10 Roon app. to control Roon. At some point I connected to VPN to do some work. When I went to Roon to adjust the volume Roon app had lost the core. When I disconnected VPN the Core connection came back.

Is there an issue with Roon on my home network when VPN is active? With VPN active I’m still able to ping/see other devices on my home network. I doubt this is the first time I’ve been using Roon while working connected via one of my VPN clients.

Roon generally doesn’t work with VPN active.

I read a few VPN posts after searching but it seemed like people were trying to get VPN to work to access Roon remotely…as in access their home Roon from a different location.

I’m just trying to get my local system to work as normal when I’m remoted in to a client’s location. Is that not possible?

Works fine for me. Connected to VPN 10 hrs a day for work and Roons happily working. It might be down to the type of VPN connectionn and security levels they allow. Some will only allow all routing via the VPN so you loose local network and only get it via VPN connection. Some allow to route via your own network.

Likely the VPN your using routes all traffic via VPN for security reasons not much you can do if they work like that, so Roon won’t work if core is on same computer as it gets locked out of your home network. If it’s on something else then might be another issue.

My Core is on a NUC running ROCK in my basement. My Home office and Win10 machine with Win Roon client is on another floor both are connected by ethernet cables and a couple of switches. While using the VPN client in question I can see other resources on my home network and my customers network…things like their SQL database and network share folder. I can also see my NAS and other devices on my network.

It’s probably affecting the broadcasts on the network that roon relies on for client server Comms.

Yep most likely as I said internet will be routed via the clients VPN so this is likely blocked there end.

Hi @RPlace,

Roon relies on multicast network traffic to function properly, and all devices must be on the same IP range. It’s definitely possible that the VPN is not allowing this network activity to function as expected, and that is resulting in the Windows machine being unable to find the Core. It’s possible that you could configure the VPN to work properly, but this isn’t something we regularly test nor support in an official capacity.
