Windows Machine constantly restarting (ref#FFLGIQ)

Hey @Jorgen_Ekelund,

We’d be happy to take another look, but it looks like your Roon Server is having trouble connecting with our upstream servers, could you please use the directions found here and send over a set of logs to our File Uploader?

A few things to test in the meantime:

  • Power cycle your Kitchen, Bedroom, and Home Theater zone devices.
  • Restart your Roon Server and network router.
  • If your speakers are part of a stereo pair (e.g., Sonos or Bluesound), ensure that the pairing is properly configured in the manufacturer’s app (Sonos, BluOS, etc.).

My apologies if this has been glazed over, but how are your devices connected to your router/server? Please test out hardwiring them if they’re over wifi, and let me know if you run into the same issues. :+1:

Hi Benjamin,
Thank you for your reply.
I uploaded the zipfile to you as instructed.

  • Power cycle your Kitchen, Bedroom, and Home Theater zone devices.

I am not sure what you mean with power cycle. I reboot my PC, where my Roon server is, every day, is that the same?

  • Restart your Roon Server and network router.

I have done that several times since I started the trial with Roon in December

  • If your speakers are part of a stereo pair (e.g., Sonos or Bluesound), ensure that the pairing is properly configured in the manufacturer’s app (Sonos, BluOS, etc.).

I am sure it is done properly, Bluesound support has helped me with that and other issues during the last quarter 2024.

I have a Bluesound system with a Bluesound POWERNODE 2i (HDMI) wired to a TP link router and connected to 2 passive speakers. Furthermore I have 2 pairs of Bluesound PULSE FLEX 2i and a pair of Bluesound PULSE FLEX 2. These are connected through Wifi and it will take a great effort to connect them via cable. Anyway, Bluesound support confirmed that the Wifi worked just fine.

The problem I used to have with Bluesound was that the active group (the one playing) always lost focus. That doesn´t happen with Roon. This is one of the reasons I want to use Roon.

Regards,
Jörgen

Hello @Jorgen_Ekelund ,

Thanks for confirming the above. Looking over your Roon logs, it looks like we see dropouts with the Pulse Flex at the IP address of 192.168.0.153 most of the time. If you try to perform your tests without this Flex in the group, does the system work as expected?

Hi Noris,

That is one of two older players, Bluesound Pulse Flex 2 (Living Room Right), the other, Living Room Left has the IP address 192.168.0.117. The other 4 are Pulse Flex 2i.

I have also suspected that the 2 Pulse Flex 2 could be the reason for several problems. I have tried to exluding them for some Bluesound issue, among them the problem with the active group, without success, though.

I noticed that the second problem, where one player in the pairs are unavailable in Roon was solved when I unpaired all my Bluesound players in BluOS.

I suspect that reason of the drop-outs can be that the Roon server that is on my PC (Windows 11) suddenly shuts down or hibernates. I have tried to set the system to never do so, but it still does.

Regards,
Jörgen

Hey @Jorgen_Ekelund,

Thanks for sharing those details! It’s good to hear that unpairing the Bluesound devices in BluOS helped with some of the issues.

Regarding your PC potentially going to sleep, Windows may still enter sleep mode due to certain power settings. Could you try the following steps to ensure it stays awake?

  1. Check Power & Sleep Settings: Go to Settings > System > Power & sleep and set both Screen and Sleep to Never.
  2. Disable Hibernation: Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run:
powercfg -h off
  • This will turn off hibernation completely.
  1. Adjust Advanced Power Options: Go to Control Panel > Power Options and select High Performance (or Ultimate Performance if available).
  • Click Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings, then: Expand Hard Disk > Turn off hard disk after and set to Never (or 0).
    • Expand USB settings > USB selective suspend setting and set to Disabled.
    • Expand PCI Express > Link State Power Management and set to Off.
    • Expand Sleep and disable Allow hybrid sleep and Hibernate after.
  1. Prevent Sleep When Roon Is Running: Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run:
powercfg /requestsoverride PROCESS Roon.exe SYSTEM
  • This tells Windows not to let the system sleep while Roon is active.
  1. Check Wake Timers: In Advanced power settings, under Sleep, ensure Allow wake timers is Enabled.
  • This helps Roon prevent Windows from sleeping.

Try these steps and see if your PC stays awake while Roon is running. Let me know how it goes!

performed all the steps you outlined, but one step was different in my settings:

In the below step I couldn’t find the options you wrote:
*Expand Sleep and disable Allow hybrid sleep and Hibernate after.
My options under sleep were the following:

Any ideas,

Jörgen

Hi @Jorgen_Ekelund,

Based on your settings, it seems like you may still have set the proper sleep settings for this test - were you able to check if your issues persisted after making the changes above?

Hi Benjamin,
there is no change as the PC turns off every now and then. So when I listen to Roon the connection is suddenly lost and I have to change to BluOS or restart the PC.

Jörgen

Hi @Jorgen_Ekelund,

This is expected behavior, unfortunately. You’ll need to keep your server machine online and actively connected to your network for proper playback.

Perhaps setting up a different device that you can better control this aspect would be helpful?

Another option, if adjusting your power saving / sleep settings isn’t helping, would be to test out installing a third party software to help with keeping your Windows online. A few popular options are:

  1. Caffeine
  • How it works: Simulates a key press every 59 seconds to prevent sleep.
  • Download: Caffeine
  1. NoSleep.exe
  1. Don’t Sleep
  1. Mouse Jiggler
  1. Insomnia

Hi Benjamin,
Unfortunately I don´t have any other device to run Roon server on.

I installed 3. Don’t Sleep and it seems like it is working, at least my PC is not unexpectedly shutting down, go to sleep or hibernate.

However, since I installed it Roon has stopped several times, while the PC was running, and I get the message: “Tidal media loading slowly…”

Since I installed Don´t Sleep Roons has stopped during the below occasions:

09:43: Roon stopped - Tidal media loading slowly
10:09: Roon stopped - Song “Don’t Explain”
13:44: Roon stopped - “The nearness of you”
15:00: Roon stopped -jumped to next song: “Terminal 7” had to press play
15:07: Roon stopped - jumped to next song: “Human nature” had to press play
15:21: Roon stopped - no song

You write that the server machine has to be online and actively connected to your network for proper playback.
How can I detect if that is the case with my PC? Or my WiFi or Internet?
Now, thanks to Don´t Sleep it is not shutting down or hibernate anymore.

Jörgen

Hi @Jorgen_Ekelund,

Since your Roon Server is hosted on your Windows computer all you need to to is check the network connection in the lower right hand corner of the screen.

This trace means that your server is connected to the internet but not able to retrieve the data from Tidal fast enough to keep playing. We have seen users have a better experience in the past if they change their Router’s DNS servers from the ISP provided ones to Cloudflare DNS, Quad9 or Google DNS. Can you please give this a try and let me know if it helps?

Hi Daniel,
I understand that the icon in the right corner depict when I am connected, but what I meant was how do I know what the problem is when Roon stops even though the icon is shown? Is has happened when the PC PC been idle (not sleeping or hibernating) for some time while Roon is playing. When I start a program or just move the mouse Roon stops. What can be the reason behind that?

My PC has turned off a couple times the last 24 hours and I needed cut off the power to get it started again. Can the reason be the Don’t Sleep program? It has never happened before.

I am not sure about the speed retrieving data from Tidal, I never have any problems with that using BluOS. Why should it cause Roon to give me that message?

Regards,
Jörgen

Hey @Jorgen_Ekelund,

Changing your DNS server can sometimes improve the connection between TIDAL and Roon by ensuring faster and more reliable access to TIDAL’s servers. Your DNS (Domain Name System) acts like the internet’s address book, translating web addresses (like tidal.com) into actual server locations.

By default, your internet provider assigns a DNS server, but some ISP-provided DNS servers can be slow, outdated, or prone to errors, which may cause issues when Roon tries to stream TIDAL content. Switching to a well-known public DNS, such as Google DNS (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4) or Cloudflare DNS (1.1.1.1, 1.0.0.1), can lead to reducing delays when Roon requests TIDAL, tracks, avoiding connectivity issues caused by ISP DNS failures.

Trying a different DNS server is a simple, safe step that may resolve the issue. Let us know if you need guidance on how to make the change!

Hi Benjamin,

When Bluesound support went through my whole system last year, including the router and its setting we managed to optimize it for streaming of Tidal. It works very well with Bluesound now, so I wonder why it shouldn´t work for Roon?
The big problem now is that, after doing all the changes in the settings on my PC to prevent shut down, hibernation etc it shuts down totally 3-4 times a day. I have to unplug it and plug it in again and start it up, I never had that problem before. I don´t knwo what to do, any ideas?

Jörgen

Hi @Jorgen_Ekelund,

I’m sorry to hear you’re having issues with your PC shutting down… That sounds really frustrating! Since your PC is shutting down completely several times a day, that points to an issue outside of Roon itself—possibly something hardware-related or a power setting that’s still affecting the system.

I’d recommend reaching out to your PC manufacturer’s support team, as they’ll have the best insight into potential causes, whether it’s a power supply issue, thermal shutdown, or a firmware-related setting. In the meantime, you might also check the Windows Event Viewer to see if any system errors are being logged around the time of the shutdowns—it could provide clues as to what’s happening.

Hope this helps, and I hope you’re able to get it sorted out soon!

Hi Benjamin,
I don´t know why it is shutting down, it has never happened before. The problem started after doing all the changes of the power settings you suggested and trying out the 3. Don’t Sleep software (which I uninstalled).

If it is Roon or not I don´t know, maybe the best way to use it is to have the core in a dedicated hardware.

I really like Roon, but for now it feels to unreliable to use it as it affects my PC that I have to use on a daily basis.

Can you please tell me how to completely uninstall Roon in a way that it leaves no traces on my PC.

I will evaluate if I, in the future, will chose a dedicated hardware, a ROCK or something. But for now I need to concentrate in fixing my PC.

Regards,
Jörgen

Hi @Jorgen_Ekelund,

Roon doesn’t have the ability to shut down a machine itself - only the Roon Server software running on the machine.

Do you have a recently saved backup?

After you uninstalled Roon, navigate to C:\Users\[*Your username*]\AppData\Local and delete all Roon folders:

RAATServer
Roon
RoonGoer
RoonServer

That will remove Roon. If you want a fresh install - (download here), restore your recently saved backup to load your prior library settings.

Hi Benjamin,
How do I know if I have a recently saved backup?
I tried to uninstall Roon from my PC but I got the message “Please quit the instances of RoonServer before continuing…” and can´t go on from there:

Please advise on how to proceed.

I have uninstalled Roon from my mobile without any problems, though.

Regards,
Jörgen

Hi @Jorgen_Ekelund,

Did you perform any backups? Or, did you setup automatic backups at anypoint? Here’s more information on backups in general:

This means you still have an active instance of Roon Server still running - did you quit Roon Server before doing so? This is required before uninstalling Roon or any application. You can typically quit Roon Server via your system tray on your Windows. :+1:

Hi Benjamin,

Now I succeded to uninstall Roon, thank you.

I didn’t need to perform any backup as I didn’t save any valuable information during the time I used Roon.

Stepping back for a moment, I need to figure out my next move. A dedicated Roon server seems like the best way to go. I’m going to do some research and see where it leads.

Jörgen
