Worth upgrading from Raspberry with Khadas Tone2Pro to Wiim Ultra?

Hi everyone,

I’m considering upgrading my audio setup and I was wondering if it’s worth switching from my current setup (Raspberry Pi with Ropiee and Khadas Tone2Pro DAC) to the new Wiim Ultra.

My current setup is connected to a Denon X3800H receiver with Focal Sib Evo speakers, which sounds great for now. However, in the future I plan on adding a separate amplifier and speakers just for music listening.

The thing that’s confusing me is the difference in specifications between the Khadas Tone2Pro and the Wiim Ultra.

The official website of my DAC states:

“Supported Sampling Rate: USB:PCM 16-32bit/44.1-768KHz DSD Native DSD64-DSD512;Dop DSD64-DSD256”

On the other hand, the Wiim Ultra’s spec sheet says:

“Stream crystal-clear music up to 24-bit/192 kHz from platforms like Spotify, Amazon Music, TIDAL, Qobuz, or your own library.”

From what I understand, my DAC seems to support higher sampling rates and DSD formats than the Wiim Ultra. Am I missing something? Does the Wiim Ultra have any hidden capabilities that would make it a better choice for me?

I’d love to hear from anyone who has experience with both setups and can give me some advice on whether it’s worth upgrading.

If you want or will use its additional features then it may be worth it. It obviously offers more than just Roon which is a good thing, as for sq not sure you would gain much. You do have the option to output to an external dac to improve things if needed but it’s always limited to 192/24 max. So if you have DSD file or PCM higher it will all be downsampled.

It does have some nice features, the Wiim app is very good for this type of device has support for multiple streaming sources, it has a no bad D2A so you can send analogue stuff through it, has hdmi arc for your TV, you can use it as a dac for another device via its digital input. It has its own DSP engine with its own Room correction software and PEQ but this isn’t as good as Roons own DSP in my experience.

It’s nice device for the money but only you can really decide if it’s worth the extra investment. It’s cheap enough to buy and send back via Amazon if you don’t get on with it so try it and see.
