The Yamaha RX-A6A is Roon Tested, which means the DAC will be recognised by Roon when connecyed via the USB input*. Only Roon Ready devices are recognized over the network.
I have the RX-V6A (same DAC as A6A), and i show it listed in the audio section under the “Roon tested” section, labeled as " other network devices" with it’s own IP via Airplay 2. I don’t even have it enabled.
Thanks for your reply.
I have a A6A which is a little bit different. But you are right it is showing as an airplay device.
Too bad airplay changes the audio quality. I will try and connect it directly to the server or get a different streamer.
My TSR-700 shows as Airplay under “Other network devices”. It is unlikely Yamaha will firmware update to Roon even to the Avantage line. I think this is also the case for other brands as well. Maybe in future models but, the older audio brands are such a mess now and can’t keep up with Chi-Fi on software and streaming IMO. Your case in point:
The easiest thing is to use a WiiM Pro Plus and run RCA out to the RX-A6A. The DAC on the WiiM is transparent and superb. Combined with it also being a Roon Ready device, it is great. It blew my mind. I did not believe the whole “just get a WiiM!” because, well, my AVR does it all, right? Nope.
Also, the WiiM has all the steaming service Connects for couch control and more, like ability to add HLS, ALS, HTTP, etc. lossless stations. Yamaha cannot add station addresses, only what is on the list, with Musiccast. Bonkers.
While Yamaha will have the ability, for instance, to play Qobuz on it, it is only via its own MusicCast app, not Connect. So, just not fun and bare bones. But, works fine…
I think the WiiM Pro Plus is the sweet spot for adding a preamp/streamer to AVRs that, just don’t cut the mustard now. Even if you do not have Roon, they offer all the Connects.
But, alas, Airplay/Airplay 2 and Apple Music are still their own thing so, for that, on my main system, I run an Airplay 1 receiving device toslink into the WiiM. Works great as 16/44.1 lossless. The WiiM even auto switches to it!
But, depending on service sending, Roon is exclusive/hog mode, it probably sends the same to an Airplay 2 receiver. No Apple audio chip interfering. So I do it via Airplay mainly because I prefer the AKM in the WiiM over the TI DAC in the Yamaha. But your Avantage has a ESS Hyperstream DAC ES9026PRO so, try it out. Could sound great for any form you send. I think it will sound great no matter what you send it! Even AAC 256.
