Your roon server doesn't seem to be running, but client works

I changed my password on the website, now my roon server won’t start. However, roon client on my phone and iPad play music as if it’s running.

I’m using a MacBook pro as a server

Hello @Rob_Sanderson, welcome to the community!

If your phone and iPad are playing music normally, your Roon Server is definitely running.

Could you clarify what exactly you are seeing on your MacBook - is there an error message, and if so what does it say? A screenshot would be very helpful.

It cycles between these two

@Rob_Sanderson this shows your MacBook is ready but it appears that its IP address is not being set correctly.

From your iPhone or iPad, what is the IP address assigned to your Roon Server iin Settings → Roon ARC? You don’t need to be using ARC, it’s just an easy way to find the Roon Server IP address.

thanks. What do I do once I have the IP address?

It’s more to confirm if your Server is being assigned a valid IP address and it’s being seen on the same subnet as your other Roon devices.

My iPad and iPhone both say 192.168.1.27, the mac my server says 127.0.0.1

After 4 days, it just started working again - weird! It’s a buggy app

Hello @Rob_Sanderson

Since you’re running macOS, the behavior you’re seeing is consistent with the newer, stricter Local Network permission controls in the recent macOS releases.

Please try the following steps:

  1. Open macOS System Settings → Privacy & Security → Local Network
  2. Make sure Roon and Roon Server are both enabled
  3. Even if they are already enabled, please toggle them off and back on
  4. Fully quit Roon Server from the macOS menu bar / task bar
  5. Reboot your Mac
  6. After reboot, launch Roon again and check if the devices is avaliable again.

Once these permissions are refreshed and the system restarted, your server should reappear.

Please let us know if the issue persists after these steps, and we’ll continue from there.

Hi @Rob_Sanderson

Checking in before this topic thread times out and closes for inactivity. The latest diagnostics to reach our servers show an active Roon Server matching the Mac you described above. It’s been a few days since the remotes last pinged our servers, however.

Are you still having connection troubles?

All seems fine again now - thanks

Hi @Rob_Sanderson

That is excellent news! I am glad to hear that toggling those Local Network permissions got your devices communicating with the Roon Server again.

Happy listening!
