Your Roon Server doesn't seem to be running

Roon Core Machine

Core i7 3770 Ivy Bridge custom built PC
Windows 11 Pro 22H2
24 GB DDR3 ram (8GB used as ram drive)

Networking Gear & Setup Details

Pretty much everything is connected by 1Gb lan except the control devices.
Music is on an old QNAP TS-412 running QTS 4.3.3.2420

Connected Audio Devices

I am not even getting as far as any audio components, just directly remoting in to the server PC.

Number of Tracks in Library

Well I wouldn’t know except that I can still see them in Plex, 75609 tracks apparently.

Description of Issue

  • Roon has been running on this PC for some time, more than a year.
  • I was previously running ExpressVPN and everything worked except RoonARC.
  • Recently changed to Private Internet Access mainly for its port forwarding ability in the hope that I could get RoonArc working.
  • I honestly have not really had the chance to play around with it properly, however it seemed that connecting from another Windows machine worked fine, but Android did not work at all no matter how many split tunnels or access all local device settings I set up.
  • I tried split tunneling the Roon server on the server PC and was going to have a look at the results of that, but when I opened Roon (remoting in from another PC) it was completely white, a common occurrence that is “solved” by restarting Roon.
  • As Roon was restarting, a message came up that the database was upgrading, then I received the “Your Roon server doesn’t seem to be running” error.

At this stage I assumed the application not being tunneled may not be able to see the server that is, so I tried:

  • Split tunnelling the app as well - no change.
  • Going back to both server and app going through the PIA - no change.
  • Pressing “Start Roon Server” (in various configurations) no change.
  • Restarting the PC without the VPN running - no change.

Basically it looks like the Roon server is just dead. It is worth noting that Plex comes up every time without issue and can be accessed by all my devices. It is also worth noting that all of this is being done remoting into the PC that actually has the server on it, so it can’t possibly be a connection issue.

I’m interested in hearing what the next steps are, apart from just using Plex, or putting on a CD.

Regards
Jason

Did you check the Allow Lan traffic’ ?

You can also try unchecking the VPN Kill Switch (enabled by default):

Yes, I had tried all those options, although I am still fiddling around to figure out what is going to work best.

Currently I seem to have fixed the Server not running error by reinstalling the Roon server software. I was extremely wary of uninstalling it as I was concerned that I would lose my library, however I was able to just install “over the top”.

I seemed to have fixed my Android not connecting issue by turning off “Block connections without VPN”, which appears to be similar to the VPN Kill Switch option on Windows but controlled by Android. Interestingly (or perhaps, worryingly) it will then connect without “Allow LAN Traffic” ticked or any split tunnelling. I will have to do some research on PIAs site about what that allows through.

Thanks for the suggestions!

even so, I recommend leaving this ticked.

Bear in mind, the Roon Server needs to “phone home” (ie connect to Roon Labs servers) as well as your LAN in order to work …

A correction on my previous comment, you do have to have Roon split tunnelled on Android (control) devices for it to work. It was only working in my case as I had not refreshed the connection after changing the setting.

Yes, this is my biggest problem with Roon, especially as it was not the case when I originally purchased and seems to immediately kill all Roon functionality (i.e. playing music) on loss of internet.
