Zen Stream Roon Ready - How?

That’s something that I experience as well. I believe this due to DoP mode that I use. As Zen Stream is limited to 384 kHz it cannot handle DSD256 over USB (as it would require PCM 705,6). It cannot also handle anything above DSD64 over coax (as coax spec limits transport to PCM 192).
In my case Raspberry PI with Roon Bridge can handle DSD256 without problem on the same DAC.

Yes it looks like a bug or maybe something Roon wanted as part of the RR process. The web page was the only place I could find this as I do not use the app. Roon knows right away though.
I guess this will break AIO mode for many users.

I got DSD 256 working last night (with the Zen DAC) but the right light changed from Blue to Red, but I thought it was because I kept messing with the DSP.
I will Play some more this morning.

One more observation: Zen Stream disappeared from Settings–>About while is still visible under Settings–>Audio.

Is that a normal behavior of RR devices?
I wonder how the Bridge updating on Zen Stream will look like…

Mine was disappearing while I was changing settings on the web page a couple of times but always showed back up (though that was in the Audio Settings and not about).
Just noticed that under Settings->about I am only seeing Core and pc on build 923 and all the other devices are gone (including my 2 other RR devices).

All showing up in settings->Audio though

So some more testing this morning with the Stream in it’s new RR state.

DSD64 & DSD128 now gives Blue light on both Zen Stream and Zen Dac.
DSD256 gives me a RED LED on the Stream and a Blue LED on the Zen Dac.

Not sure this has been documented yet, but I like Blue lights I cannot lie so I have gone back to DSD128

I also just re-installed the iFi Streamer app and that seems to be the easiest way to quickly switch the output between USB & SPDIF, though now I have to make two DSP pre-sets for the different settings. Not much of an issue to be fair.

I don’t understand why people hang on to this certification… it works very well as a “Roon Tested” device.
But I see a real point in it if the “Roon Ready” statement complies with what Roon describes here :

The RAAT technology is the backbone of the Roon Ready program. It offers technological benefits such as:

1. Network auto-discovery of devices

2. Highly reliable daily operation

3. 32-bit/768khz PCM playback

4. DSD playback

5. Multi-channel playback

6. DAC as its own clock master

7. Two-way communication (for volume, mute, convenience switching, metadata displays, standby controls, and other commands)

8. Multi-room synchronization of devices from different manufacturers For more information on the design goals and philosophy behind RAAT, see here.

Does the entire scope of RAAT have to be respected? If so, would that mean that Zen could stream 768 PCM now ? :face_with_raised_eyebrow:
Or could it be “Roon ready” limited to 384… small “Roon ready”?

Stef I have a Bluesound PowerNode and it does not do DSD, so that makes me think not all are required.
Agree that it worked perfectly before, but by all accounts Roon are quite testing when it comes to the signal path and getting visibility all the way through it. That seems to be a blocker for a number of companied who had to start again.

Been listening on headphones all afternoon and all is good.

I admit that I am a Roon user but with HQPlayer and in this case, the certification has little interest.
On the other hand, what would be interesting in the long run is the unlocking of PCM and DSD streams with a new kernel.
I am limited to DSD128 dop.
Let’s stay positive, this update is perhaps a sign that iFi audio is still in development.

Otherwise, in exclusive “personal” NAA mode (minimum services and isolation of NAA on a single core)… :upside_down_face:
It works very well… The best naa player under xxx$ :+1:

Perhaps the caveat is that not all devices offer all of those benefits? That the list is a representative sampling?

RR adds the ability to auto change inputs and has exclusive audio use during this. You don’t get in a situation where another protocol hogs the audio output which can happen with Roon bridge if they are not released properly. Roon Ready ensures proper switching to Roon and to release when done. It also gives options for full power controls via Roon which is very handy. Roon can power on device and switch inputs , also out it in standby when your done. Obviously these things might be relevant to the Zen but are features I hold in regard in my Naim Atom and I would not get those with Roon bridge.

From what I remember about the board, that is the latest version of Linux available.
It’s a pity that it cannot be further updated as you have said.

Do you think the limitations are related to the board ?
For the cpu board, it looks like it’s Rock64 (RK3328) and DietPi has a Bullseye 64bit image vs Jessie 32 on Zen.

DietPi_ROCK64-ARMv8-Bullseye.7z

Fairly sure it was mentioned in the other thread about there not being a more modern kernel available for this particular board.
A lot of people were Hopi for an updated kernel but it hasn’t happened and doesn’t look likely to.
It’s a pity as it really is a good product and if it had newer features available it could hang around a long time.
As it is it was great value when I bought mine week one and as it came with the good power supply I have enjoyed it for almost a year and finally Roon Ready has arrived.

Unfortunately we are never going to get the promised Chromecast audio support, but I have a few of those and never really needed it.

I’m not a specialist… or at least it could be confirmed that it is not possible to recompile it without changing the sources but by changing the options to remove the PCM and DSD limitations.

Otherwise I’ve already optimised everything I could (and did) do.

Stef it was a while ago but a modern kernel will not compile for the device seemed to be the issue.
If I remember correctly it was @David_Snyder who explained it (I might be wrong but I think it might have been).

I am long away from compiling Linux kernels these days, though I did build a lot of them while writing software as a junior developer in the very early days of SLS Linux (and 8 floppy disk distributions). If you remember those days you must be getting old like me

After an hard reset to remove the beta, now back to the latest stable IFi release.

But now one quirk is present, roon does not update the roon bridge software on the IFi…

Is that a bug in the latest Roon build
It doesn’t seem to pick up all the devices in Settings-> about

It does pick up my devices, but it does not update the zen stream. Anyway in todays world we are used to live with constant bugs.

It seems particularly with Roon and Zen even more so.

My Zen Stream does not even appear in the latest Roon about box. Maybe I should reboot and see if that helps.
