GREAT - thanks a lot for bringing back offline functionality.
Yet Iād also argue that the whole premise of Roon is to avoid /work around these types of things. I tried the Andre album again, and the Radio track after was again rap (Kendrick Lamar).
Iām not even sure if thereās a setting I do or donāt have checked that can change this (Iāve removed any genre tags to do with hip hop or pop music - see screenshot) and Iām a seven year now lifer. I have no clue what genre mapping is, and I just now switched on the use genres extracted from file tags to see what that does.
And this all leads back to a basic conundrum of Roon - it can be too damn confusing for the average user.
So thrilled to hear about the no internet need. Now just hoping to see some real product support and an end to the need to seek help through the forum. I get that this has been hard for the founders to enable given their resources and the complexity of the product. I am a huge Harmon fan and own several of their brands products. While I do not place Samsung in my Good Guys list, they seem to be leaving the Harman Group members to do their own thing which includes some of the best support I have received in 50 years of being and audiophile. Looking forward to seeing this spill over into Roon. Exciting times!
Thatās actually a good one I have been noticing latelyā¦ says Album Not Found, but when you look in the discography, the album is there, just proably republished with a different DIN number.
Greatly appreciate this update. Looking forward to keeping a keen eye on future developments
I would propose to add a button in Roon (Library?) settings that enables tagging of imported files with a tag taken from the folder where the file is located. With a specific prefix in the naming it can be easily sorted out among other tags. Then user can use Focus and play folders and create Playlists (for ARC) and even combine the Focus filtering it with other options like Genre, Release Year (if filed recognized by Roon), Last Played etc.
If hierararchy of folders is needed then this can be done by adding tags into tags to ease the use in Focus. New files added will automatically be tagged just by being added to the preferred folder, no change in Roon GUI except for setting menu. I would assume that the main requirement is not to be able to open the file-explorer from Roon but to support being able to play music based upon location in a folder structure. Not sure but ,
This all sounds extremely interested but I have two main concerns ā¦

Please donāt ignore headphone users. There are many of us in the music collecting and audiophile categories that thoroughly enjoy listing through headphones and there are some fabulous headphones on the market - please continue to develop the listening experience through these.
-
Iām not clear on what is mean by the reference to folders, but please keep it simple and donāt Destroy the simplicity of the navigation that I enjoy today. I have a nightmare image of having to wade through folder after folder in some Windows '95 esque distopia.
Other than that, keep on doing the good stuff you do.
Oh, but make ARC more simplistic and less reliant on using port forwarding and other settings that quite frankly, require a masters in networking to get set up.
Please also remember that not all ISPs support the settings ARC requires. Itās a great tool if you can get it working but I suspect there is a large number of the Roon community whom are locked out of using ARC.
Iām strictly a headphone user but I donāt understand how our music needs would be different from those using speakers?
Iām not really a fan of the Harman curve but now that roon is owned by Harman, I could see having settings for different headphone to tune them to the Harman curve if they choose. But other than this, not sure what makes us different?
Once again, people are making incorrect inferences from what was said.
Try Collectorz.com. They have music library software that does exactly that. Itās not a player, just music management. They also do books, videos, and other stuff.
If they do, I canāt see it on their Web site. All the screenshots just show cover pics laid out automatically in one big window, just like every other thumbnail arrangement.
I was thinking more like a two or even a two-and-a-half D space, with manual placement of albums. Just like a set of shelves with CDs placed edge in, only the spine showing. Or even fancier, if necessary. More like this āmemory palaceā approach (from 1511):
Maybe with multiple rooms, like this:
Iām surprised if āfolder browsingā is a widely wanted thing in this day and age. Everyone I know who rips their CD library just lets dbpoweramp rip to a single folder, then dbpoweramp seems to create artist folders by itself.
It would be fine if āfolder browsingā is a simple on/off UI feature; but if having it compromises the future way Roon develops then it seems odd that such a niche thing should inhibit the potential of Roon.
I do not need folder browsing in Roon, but I would love the ability to use elements of path names when creating filter combos that I can save as bookmarks.
I recall the many threads and lengthy discussions regarding folder browsing. My thoughts remain the same. Whether you are for, against or donāt care; why not have it, so long as it does no affect the performance & is easily switchable? The fact remains that it is the typical form of browsing & no doubt would appeal to many non Roon users at the very least.
Looking at the looooong list of genre tags I wonder if ROON just got as confused as I am.
What would the correct genre be in your opinion, and would others agree?
I mean, this is his first and only Solo Album, which I would describe as something New Age / Ambient stuff. But look at the genres he supposedly covers as an artist:
From ROONs perspective everything from that list could be a fit. But he is āone of the best rappers in the gameā, and this is what ROON goes for.
Also, you can click ādoes not fitā any time to train roon on not presenting RAP. Maybe putting focus on New Age might help, too.
Well, there is more to this. You may want to have a look at Tag Field Mappings ā Mp3tag Documentation.
Obviouslyā¦. I wasnāt suggesting they were the only tags / metadata you could use. I know how metadata tagging works.
My point was that sometimes you only care about a tag like āSeason 4ā in the context of its parent, namely the show that is season 4 of. So that using tags (as they stand) to replicate a strong notion of a nested hierarchy (of which a file path is one example) potentially has limitations in terms of navigation / discovery and that Roon could improve the UI here.
Itās why we still use nested folder paradigms to manage bookmarks and desktop files, potential alongside tagging.
You can make it Audio Only from a menu on the main UI. It shows as Audio only in JRemote too
Hopefully it will be something you can turn off / not enable. But, if not, I guess . . . donāt click the Folders button?
Seriouslyā¦ I canāt stand this whole idea that thereās somehow ādangerā inherent - itās software. Donāt click on the folder browsing tab, and even if one does, itās Roon, so there will most likely be (too) many steps and warnings before one can do anything as it is. Itās not like one will go to browse their albums on the āAlbumsā view and suddenly be folder browsing. Danger is being lost at night outside the cave. Iām pretty sure the Neanderthals didnāt have an app for thatā¦
