Advice on a (really) cheap Roon Server

Looks like something very similar is currently available for 254 euros.

Would you recommend?

I could run this without a monitor right?

Thanks!

Hello and welcome to the community. I’ve had my setup for almost 5 years now. At that time in 2019 I wanted to build my own server and was following the Roon recommendations for hardware. Don’t think there were any second hand builds then. It can be less expensive to go that route now.

It may or may not suit your needs. Personally I wouldn’t go under recommend specs. Also some of these don’t come with dual channel ram but a single stick which can hinder performances best to check this. Also if you plan to have these in listening area I would not recommend them as the fans are quite loud. Mines tucked away from the Hifi with all my other data gear.

I’ve been using Intel NUC7PJYH (J5005 - 4 cores, 8GB RAM and 512GB SSD…and around 20TB in USB external) with Windows 10 for many years for Roon and Plex. The only issue I had with it came from the fan in the first unit, which I RMA’d.

If you’re going to be running ROCK on an older NUC/mini PC, I think you should be fine longevity wise. However, if I was buying something today and planned on using Windows, I’d get something newer that would be supported for years to come along with Windows 11.

Requirements can change at a moment from any OS or software (Roon) and suddenly over night you can find that your PC that was running the application perfectly is not able to run the new update at all.

Thanks.

I ordered one so hope I don’t regret it. Worked out to be 224 euros so worse case scenario I can always pass it on to my young nephew.

But hopefully will do the job and yes will be tucked away in a cupboard so noise wont be an issue.

cheers

With regards to the noise, you can also go in to the BIOS and see if there is a setting for fan. My Intel NUC’s BIOS will let you adjust the noise profile of the fans in BIOS settings. Figuring out how to enter the BIOS on my particular NUC was the tricky part honestly. Once you’re in, I think I went to the cooling/performance tab? There were 3 settings of fan Cool (fans on - most noise), Balanced (variable noise - this is default), and Quiet (you don’t hear the fans go up and down, it’s very low level). With Quiet profile, you can run it even outside if you ever need to.

Just an idea if you ever feel annoyed the fans or change its location

My NUC8 i3 runs Roon ROCK just fine with zero issues, but I don’t use the audio processing/EQ…you really don’t need much CPU to run Roon straightforwardly.

Hello, I imagine that it will still be over the budget, without being too expensive from my point of view, let me explain, I am referring to a Mac mini M, be it M1 or M2, since the consumption is 7w and at most, when you play music 14w, to that you add that the fan never activates, and if it does it is absolutely silent. I have the M1 version with 16GB of ram and it has plenty to date, with a local library and Tidal. As an extra, it is beautiful, equipped with plenty of ports and support for many many years. You install Roon, now with the new versions it runs only Roon server, without having to have the program open, and you update it from the tablet or mobile phone as you would with rock. You can get some second-hand a little cheaper. I leave my experience there in case it’s worth anything. Greetings.
