I just tweaked a cheap TP-Link PCIe network card, cut the 3.3v to the PCIe/motherboard and replaced it with a linear voltage regulator board and external power (currently using a battery pack of 4AA batteries as power). It sounds very good, not at all hard to hear improvements over my vanilla ethernet switch I used before (which I also ran on batteries).
For me, USB-to ethernet on my NUC with DC blocker and 5v PSU (Shanti). RJ45 cat5 monoprice slimrun 30awg + galavanic filter (MED Mi1005) before 2 Cisco Meraki (cascade and PSU) >> Allo USBridge (Shanti).
I got my first āaudiophileā switch almost 2 years ago; an Audiovox SE. The sound was noticeably better than my TP Link switch which I junked. Until recently, I was quite satisfied and contented with the sound. Then I saw the reviews about the Uptone audio EtheRegen and ordered it with a Keces P8 Power supply. The sound was more full-bodied but I immediately noticed that it added significant Coloration to the sound and the highs we a bit too shrill for my liking. Even after giving it ample break in time, I really didnāt like it. Then I took the big plunge and ordered the ā¬4150 JCat M12 gold switch. After letting it break in for two weeks, I actually quite like the sound. But here is the catch: to get the best sound out of it you have to get the JCat optimo duo 3 linear power supply which is another ā¬1500 So the total cost ends up being ā¬5650 inclusive of two ethernet cables. Thatās a ton of money and after listening to my system a lot of people may say that the Audiovox SE is a great bang for the buck at ā¬900. If I were to do it all over again Iād most likely get the Melco S100 which is $2200 and you get to choose your own ethernet cables with it rather than being stuck with the one supplied with the M12 Gold switch. In its defense, the M12 gold has what I would call a mature sound that grows on you and is an acquired taste like fine Wine and cigars. My next project would be a very interesting piece of equipment called the fiberbox II Which is made in Hong Kong and I just ordered it in the extreme version which is around $1500. I should get it in a week and it will be interesting to see how much of a claimed noise isolation it provides. The link is below
Most likely a better option than the TP link ethernet media converters. I think the only money that has been wasted was on the EtheRegen, not my cup of tea
Interesting observation, I felt the same but then took it out because I thought that it thinned out the sound and the bass was too light. Best to install it between the modem and the router so that it doesnāt have any effect on the switch
Even if he is graduating at the bottom of the class, he still in the top 10% of the population to get that level of education and expertise. There are cures for different kinds of cancer now and scientists and doctors are fervently working towards finding a cure for Covid-19. It is called research and progression in science. Until such time Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin in 1928, people were dying of common infections that no one even cares about these days.
Surely a refund would net you more? Personally I rave about it. I use the fibre optics but I also find it improves the quality of 5.1 and movies streamed from local content.
On my set up it affects sound quality. The returns have been very limited but they are a great company and generally happy to accept returns, should be no problem at all to move on a refurb. Very personable.
Regardless of opinion, this was very well written & made me chuckle.
I love the passion of this subject, of those on both sides of the fence
I guess I sit with you in that Iāve never noticed a difference between the USB & Ethernet cables that Iāve used from the Amazon Basics CAT7 I used previously. I think I always had the fear of āmissing outā, so bought the entry level stuff for just about everything in the house that is decent level kit. Thereās other people I know that use Vodka Ethernet cables on streamers & even one guy who uses one on his Apple TV that swears blind by it & has a far nicer setup than mine.
The mains leads & the digital coax I have on my CD player I feel did offer huge improvement. The mains leads massively if Iām honest, to the extent I will buy more as I see needed.
My simple mind canāt even understand the science but I do find the topic immensely immersive!
Length shouldnāt be much of an issue with ethernet.
But this is a can of worms, like all cable questions. Thereās no consensus.
Iād say no, as long as the cable is properly made and meets spec. Some very inexpensive oneās donāt. Surprisingly, some very expensive audiophile ones also donāt.
There are a few vendors, like Blue Jeans cable that test each cable to make sure it meets spec - and they send you a print of the test resultsā¦
My answer with routers is the same. Others will disagree.
FWIW I found the Melco switch very disappointing both with its own SMPS and a high-quality Sean Jacobs (Custom Hifi Cables) LPS. It distorted the soundstaging and lowered the noise floor at the expense of textural detail. Fortunately I had it on sale or return and returned it. I find the EtherRegen with the same LPS much more satisfying and realistic.
In my experience yes. I have A B tested Tidal MQA & CD tracks on Roon using SOTM Cat 7 audio Ethernet cable with standard Ethernet cable and there was a clear difference. I recall playing Back at the Chicken Shack - Jimmy Smith - MQA Tidal. The Audio cable eliminated a slightly shrill definitely fatiguing sound In the treble that I was finding annoying and distracting. I swapped in the audio cable and that disappeared and the music was definitely more engaging. It was not insignificant and on that basis, after not wanting to spend the money on the cable (!), and testing more I was more than happy to purchase.
I rarely post in forums because Iām not a fan of all the back and forth claims & find it all tedious but Iāve found it curious when I read a resounding ānoā from those who claim an upgrade Ethernet cable will make zero difference after my experience. I can only speak to my experience. I didnāt want to spend the money I can assure you.
I expect the playback system on the end of the cable may be more or less susceptible to any induced noise.
If a cable helps, buy it. If your system doesnāt need it⦠well done.
