This is correct for the Synology units I’m familiar with. 2.5" SSD “drives” can be used for either cache or storage, however - at least on some models.

When I go for all SSDs what big volume ones would you suggest?
I don’t have any specific recommendations other than to use one’s that are on the compatibility list.
Note: The HS-453DX is only compatible with specific 2.5-inch SATA SSDs and M.2 SATA SSDs. Check SSD compatibility before purchase.
Personal opinion: This device, because it doesn’t have active cooling, seems to be very sensitive to heat. Also electronic devices like for example SSDs may face reduced lifetime when operated over a longer timespan in temperatures over 60 °C. I can just hope that QNAP put devices in it’s compatibility list that are rated for higher than usual operating temperatures. I personally wouldn’t buy this device – buy a more standard NAS with active cooling instead (put it away if to noisy) and use a specialized and probably quieter media-player device of some sort in it’s intended place.
