I bought an intel NUC 13, updated the BIOS, and it became an ASUS. I don’t think it makes any difference.
The difference is that Intel NUCs are only available up to gen 13 and gen 14+ will have to be Asus
So, an ASUS processor and ancillary chips then - or just the label on the box?
No they will obviously remain Intel CPUs and probably chipsets. But - like I said - the latest generation is an Asus and not Intel-branded. I.e., saying „I hope it’s an Asus“ is, at the current point in time, equivalent to „I hope the Titan is a NUC 14 at least and Roon won’t try to sell a NUC13 for 3K+“
Well, my point was you can turn an intel nuc into an Asus one, just by updating the bios. Perhaps there’s some more magic in there, but I very much doubt it. It’s just branding.
Um, but you can’t turn a NUC13 into a NUC14 by updating the BIOS, and the 14 is the latest Intel hardware. Forget about the branding, nobody cares
ASUS doesn’t build CPU’s. When it comes to PC’s it’s either Intel or AMD.
NUC’s have always been running on Intel hardware and I don’t expect that will change.
Who was building the original NUCs for Intel? Or did they manufacture their own motherboards etc.?
I would guess Intel had their own manufacturing for NUC motherboards along with the desktop versions.
Asus could use their own MB manufacturing. I’ve used their MB’s in 5 desktops my cousins company built for me over the years. It’s my preferred brand. I for one was happy to hear ASUS picked up the NUC supply line.
No idea and can’t find any info. Wikipedia says this, but it’s ambiguous:
In July 2023, Intel announced that it would no longer develop NUC mainboards and matching mini PCs.They subsequently announced that NUC products will continue to be built by ASUS, under non-exclusive license.
I just installed ROCK on a Topton Fanless AMD Mini PC Ryzen7 5825U, 16GB DDR4, 512GB NVMe, It works flawlessly. The library has some 20,000 files, mostly ALAC and DSD. No need to update BIOS, no need for an Intel NUC.
No need for an Intel NUC
Roon does not support the running of rock on anyth8ng else but the listed hardware. Any support issues should be asked in the tinkering section.
I AM NOT ASKING FOR ANY SUPORT. I am saying no problem running ROCK on something that is not a NUC. I understand ROON won’t want to support a myriad of configurations and that is fine. But bottom line if ROON server can run on any PC running Windows I believe ROCK can run happily in any x86 compatible CPU. And it does. My post is to inform people worried about Intel pulling the plug on NUCs, that there are options for ROCK.
Agreed, but since Intel NUCs have been discontinued for ~12 months now I’m very surprised there are still no updates on the ROCK page (even if only to say sorry, you’ll all have yo go MOCK).
ASUS have announced their 14th gen NUC models, but they are not yet readily available on the market…
Personally, I’d never go Mock, I’d just load Linux or Windows. There is no advantage in using ROCK for me at all, and several disadvantages actually.
@Rugby - Is there a good guideline somewhere - that is UpToDate - how to setup a headline windows 11 that runs Roon?
