You are correct, @Francois_BOYER. Only the M17, M11Plus, M11Ltd, and M11S were updated to be Roon Ready.
Just posted about the M11 Plus on this thread:

Hey somebody had to do it ![]()
I’m on a similar route with some HD 800Ss + stock balanced cable with convolution filters, am enjoying a lot ![]()
I’m glad you posted that. I would have, but I’ve been too busy selling off a bunch of my other gear.
Sold all mine now, not recouped the cost of the M11 Plus but it’s helped a lot.
I’m not done yet. My listening habits have changed pretty significantly. I’m about to sell a pair of LSXIIs that the M11Pro made obsolete. I’m surprised at what an impact this little thing has had on how I listen to music around the house.
Okay…So, who has, or will have the FiiO R7, which is basically the M11 Plus attached to a bigger amp, with ethernet connection, and speaker terminals and a XLR headphone jack, on top of all the other connections the M11 Plus has?
Makes me think about a replacement for my RoPieee rPi USB connection to my Topping DX7 Pro (OG) that I have on my bedside table. To use that configuration, I need my phone, iPad or Chromebook to control the setup, and the R7 has the M11 Plus playert/touchscreen built in. So, it won’t save any space, but it’s all integrated.
This is a case where and all-in-one device would and does grab my attention, at least for this purpose. ![]()
Okay, so I’m replying to my own post, before anyone asks…Yes, I know I can just bring my M11 Plus up to the bedroom and put it on the bedside table.
I liked the idea that the R7 has speaker terminals on the back so I could hook up a couple speakers and just turn the device on (or have it set with an alarm to turn on at a specific time, at least I think this is possible?) and then be able to listen to some music when I wake up and am getting ready in the morning, without having to have headphones or IEMs on, which isn’t always practical, or suggested when you’re getting ready in the morning…at least for those of us that shower in the morning, never mind having to dress yourself without getting tangled up in headphone cables, tripping and falling…don’t ask how I know…

I’m waiting for it to be available here in Germany. For mobile use and in the evenings in bed I have been using the M11 Plus since August. Shure Aonic 5 or Ollo S5x
That FiiO R7 looks like a nice bit of kit ![]()
Well as is always the case when I treat myself to a new Hifi device I get stung with another bill for something else. This time the car, so what I made back on eBay has gone on the car, so those new headphones on the back burner again.
Sorry to hear this ![]()
I can live with it, don’t need them right now any way.
Let’s talk about the R7 a bit more.
It looks like the US retail price is $899. For that amount, you get the full functionality of the M11Plus (modulo the battery) as well as additional outputs, gain modes, amplification features, the option to add a linear power supply if that’s your thing, and an ethernet port. FiiO also promised an optional add-on Bluetooth remote control, though that might work with their other Android 10-based DAPs.
That functionality is very compelling for a stationary headphone listening station. Paired with the right (powered) speakers, it can do dual duty as a streamer/DAC/pre.
It’s an interesting price point because you can spend less on a Topping or Schiit stack with a RoPieee (or a WiiM Pro when that gets certified Roon Ready). You can also spend a lot more on a Naim Uniti HE (or easily go even further in that direction with dCS or the boutique brand of your choice). The Naim Uniti HE is an interesting comparison, though, because its capabilities are roughly similar but it retails for more than 4x the retail of the R7.
I have a Uniti HE on my home office desk. It’s paired with Meze headphones that are plugged into the XLR port and never move. If the R7 had been on the market when I bought the Naim, and I’d had the experience I’ve now had with the M11Plus, I honestly think I would have bought the R7. I don’t want a stack of things on my desk each requiring power. I understand if people have concerns with Android 10 but, frankly, if the comparison is to something in the price range of the Uniti HE, the price difference makes it a little easier to go down that route.
So here’s a hypothetical. If someone gave you $5,000 to set up a stationary listening system, what would you do with it? Personally, I’d spend the first $4,000 on a pair of headphones and the rest on source. There’s a good chance that would go to an R7.
It’s compelling for my office setup. As I was looking into getting some none streaming actives such as Dynaudio Lyd5 and either use my RME and a pi. But this seems a much neater option and gives me the balanced headphones as well a screen which will act as a control unlike Ropieee which has only basic play commands.
One other comment about the M7 - we need to understand how the volume knob works. On the M17, the volume knob has fixed min and max positions. This means, on that device, that you have to disable the volume knob (and use the volume buttons) if you want Roon to control the device’s volume. I hope they didn’t repeat this on the R7.
If its a fully analogue volume pot then it wont be able to control it. If it’s a digital hybrid then it possibly could. Naim use a hybrid setup in that its a digital control on top of a fully analogue volume its not digitally attenuated.
I assume the latter, but that was the case in the M17 and it still has fixed min and max positions
Good question but since I already have a killer DAC/headphone amp (Benchmark DAC3 HGC with a Pro-Ject Streambox S2 Ultra) I would just blow the $5K on some headphones.
I do agree that the Fiio R7 looks like a giant killer. You do realize that at some point in the very near future these Chinese audio manufacturers are going to realize that they should be charging a LOT more money for their great products. So pick some up while the prices are still low. ![]()
Its certainly beats the RME I have subjectively of course…
