GOOGLE & ROON: Why and which data are sent by ROON to and from bc.googleusercontent.com?

There is no “Google business” in that “bc.googleusercontent.com” you are talking about. There are only our services there. We use Google Cloud Platform to host our services. *.bc.googleusercontent.com is the reverse IP lookup for Google’s servers that we “rent” as part of their Compute Engine offering. In this case, you will find that to be their load balancers. For example, looking up the host metadata.roonlabs.net right now will result in 35.244.225.31, which if you reverse resolve, you will get 31.225.244.35.bc.googleusercontent.com.

You are getting metadata, images, room radio, playing tidal/qobuz, all the Valence stuff, updates, etc… We also collect data for many reasons, but the most important is so that we can fulfill our requirements to copyright holders. For example, every time a user views a lyric for a song, we must report what was viewed and in what geographic region. Different regions have different copyright holders so different people get paid.

The types of data we collect are noted in the privacy policy.

You may want that, but Roon never has worked entirely offline, and never will. It’s just not compatible with our vision for the product.

This is not true. Only certain “personal data” is required to be provided. I speak at great length on this subject here:

Nothing is being “collected” by “googleusercontent”. Things are being collected by Roon services being hosted on Google’s machines. It should be noted that we also use Amazon’s cloud services as well, but have mostly transitioned to Google’s cloud services.

Which data is collected and what it is used for is covered in the privacy policy, which is not written in legalese, but plain and accessible English. In the above-noted thread, you can find me talking about the GDPR specifically and how we comply using the Roon Core in your home.
