How is Roon in 2026 for a New User?

From what we understand from, various posts in the past , Support, QA and Dev are separate entities.

Reading the forum and seeing the release notes they do tend to agree . The forum is the primary source of bug reporting as well as feature requests

Roon has been quite active in the last 2 years squashing bugs and improving overall stability.

Just wanted to drop you all a quick note to thank you for the feedback. The helpfulness of many of the responses and the amount of responses makes me feel the community is strong for Roon. This gives me a lot of confidence in moving forward. I’m leaning towards purchasing the Nucleus One with an internal drive and then figuring out some sort of Mac mini backup solution to the cloud. Backblaze seems like a solid option here. Debating the lifetime sub vs. monthly. I hate subscriptions but also don’t want to be foolish financially.

I recommend starting with a monthly subscription until you are sure Roon is for you long term.

I wouldn’t go for lifetime either. I’ve been three years with Roon (after a 60-day trial, all annual subs) and if it couldn’t integrate with the streamers any more, it would be way overpriced for what it offers in (glitchy) playback.

But do sub: it’s great for discovery.

If I were starting afresh now, that’s exactly what I wouldn’t bother doing. Everything I need to listen to is on Tidal. If that applies to you too just don’t bother ripping (assuming you have a reliable internet link of course). You will get plenty of opposing views on your other questions, so good luck making sense of them.

You definitely want to rip albums you value, those that are rare or a special master. Online streaming services don’t guarantee to have exactly what you have and if they do they don’t guarantee they always will.

I have several CD’s which are not available on streaming services. I also have a lot of other music which are unavailable as well. Not to mention that music on streaming services have a tendency to disappear. So I wouldn’t consider a streaming service to be a permanent solution.

Which is why I said ‘everything I need to listen to is on Tidal’. Obviously I have no idea whether this applies to the OP.

Same here. I have lots of obscure jazz, classical and opera going back to the 1950s. Not all of it is on Qobuz or Tidal, and even those that are can “disappear” without warning due to rights or reissues. For ripped CDs, I keep original album art and booklets within Roon, especially opera librettos and song lyrics. Of course, Qobuz has some booklets, depending on the label but Tidal has no booklets. So YMMV but it can make sense to keep a ripped version of your CDs within Roon.

I am running a bunch of Raspberry Pi 3b giving me Roon around the house for the last 8 years. Very reliable and extremely good value. The ability to configure Pis with HATs as Dacs, digital streamers, or even amplifiers was one of the best things I discovered with Roon, apart from lots of new (to me) artists and music. And lots of credit to Ropieee and @Harry ten Berge.

I can give you a pretty good example. One of my favorite musicians has always been Jean-Michel Jarre. And he has been for decades.

In the 80’s he released an album called Revolutions. One of the tracks he had to re-record later as he had used the sound sample of a flute. Of which the original artist was not happy about.

All the later versions of the Revolutions track no longer feature the flute. None on CD and non on streaming. I have the original release on CD. And to be honest. The original version sounds way better than the later one.
