Introducing RoPieee - A RoonBridge-to-go image for the Raspberry Pi

So I set up a RasPi 3B with your Ropieee image to finally retire an old Squeezebox Duet. My intent was to feed the USB DAC of my Pioneer SC-LX87K receiver with a DSD64 input stream. This would work like a charm with Roon bridge running on a mac mini connected to the USB DAC interface of the Pio - but sadly not with the Raspi running Ropieee.

Can you do anything to make this happen or is it just not feasible?
Another question: on the Raspi 3B board there are 4 USB 2.0 ports - are they all initialized by Ropieee? Does it matter which USB port the DAC is connected to?

Sorry for my ignorance as a bloody Raspi newbie - and thank you very much for your help!

You did configure RoPieee? So you went to the web page and made sure USB is enabled?
And no, it does not matter which USB port you use.

And finally? What does not work? Is RoPieee detected by Roon? You enabled the endpoint?

Yes, RoPieee ist up and running, web page shows up nicely, USB is selected and committed.
RoPieee is not detected by Roon … cycled through the process of rebooting RoPieee, reconnecting USB, restarting Roon for several times…
Question: would Roon detect RoPieee if there is no USB DAC connected or not being correctly initialized?

Hi Geefes,

Yes. RoPieee is detected based on RoonBridge running. So it should look like this:

Hmmmm… I don’t think you do anything wrong tbh. This puzzles me.
Is there any chance you’re willing to retry from scratch? As in: start over with a fresh image?
I’m doubting if RoonBridge is running. And I’m realising now that’s not something you can easily see, so that’s on my todo list.

How familiair are you with the command line and SSH?

Well, nothing displayed here. Only my Squeezebox devices and the Airplay stuff.
So, RoPieee cannot talk to the USB DAC input of the Pio. What is the difference to macOS devices succeeding to talk to this very USB DAC? In the Pio manual there is a remark that DSD is accepted as DoP via USB but I am not sure if this is really right because at an other place they say DSD is supported “natively”.

Hi Spockfish,

just installed your Beta Image on my third Raspberry Pi Hifiberry Dac+ Pro with 7Inch Touchscreen

Works like a charme!

Now my LMS Setup with Jivelite => Bye Bye

Many thanks for your effort!

Best regards

René

I’m not sure I understand you correctly. Can you see the RoPIeee in the settings screen from Roon? Forget about the DAC for a moment. First we need to be sure RoPieee as endpoint is detected.

definitely no RoPieee displayed in the settings screen from Roon. Only Squeezebox devices being displayed and the Airplay stuff.
ping to ropieee is OK - ropieee web server is also displaying on port 80 - green LED is blinking slowly

Btw. isn’t seagull having the same problem with his Meridian DAC? Could it be that it has something to do with the discovery mechanism of the Roon devices in the network? UPNP problems?

I’ll start again from scratch in the weekend.
I’m not an IT guru at all, but I can try CLI if Ropieee is not detected.

Ok. I’ll try to come up with an update this weekend that simply shows the status of RoonBridge on the RoPieee. Give me a poke this weekend, I’m available to help out.

thank you very much for your great support, Harry - good night

Roopieee will show up as a device in the Roon About page, but Roon won’t show Ropieee as an audio zone if there’s no device connected to it. Or at least, mine doesn’t. If I turn the DAC off or disconnect it, Ropieee disappears from Roon.

You’re totally right! Checked it immediately this morning, and indeed. Didn’t know that  Anyhow @Geefes, this could indeed mean it has something todo with your DAC.

Just poke me this weekend and we’ll try to figure it out.

Interesting. As per my earlier photos above, I don’t have any DAC or HAT connected to my Pi3.

I’m using it only as control point and to display album art (for now) and it works fine.

That’s something else Sean. Your’re using the touch interface, that works via the RoPieee extension that talks to the Roon Core. Weather or not you have an audio device detected by Roon or not, that doesn’t matter.

Ah yes, I just remembered I’m not using it as an endpoint (yet). Apologies
Will try out the HiFiBerry’s this weekend hopefully.

@spockfish Installed beta, followed your instructions. It works! Thank you for your efforts!

I noticed that the ‘touchscreen control zone’ name did not accept spaces, so I had to rename the zone. No problem…

Yes I noticed the same but as you said, it was simple to just rename the Roon Zone.

Ah. So you originally had spaces in your zone? I’ll change that.
