Move from old ROCK to new ROCK - transfer question

Now I understand - Thanks for the explanation!

Getting parts for this new NUC build is like COVID era bad. The NUC is supposed to arrive tomorrow / Sunday after hitting the buy button a week ago. Yet, it hasn’t shipped so I’m thinking they don’t have it and there will be an even bigger delay. Prices are crazy. These data center / farms are really causing a problem.

It’s madness - I was planning upgrading my 2017 NUC7I7BNH this year. It’s served me well but is getting a little sluggish, and could do with a bit more storage. Some casual research on pricing is making me think I may need to hold off until Elon gets to Mars…

Still waiting on the NUC. Supply issues…

I’ve read or printed everything and have it lined up ready to go. My only remaining question, yeah right, is moving the library from a SSD in the old server to the new server (an M.2 drive - the new motherboard has two m.2 drives).

Seems the fastest and best is to (after a database backup) - stop roon, but keep the machines running. Through windows just drag and drop sections of the alphabet (artists) at a time until done.

Then restore the backup on the new machine.

Does THIS step sound correct?

Thank you, still waiting.

Rick - I see you’re building a new NUC for a roon ROCK core. I’ve either missed or don’t remember which NUC unit you were getting parts together for. I’m considering an ASUS 15 Pro or 15 Pro+ NUC (seems like you can get both working, although not without certain issues). Was wondering what NUC you were building your new ROCK on? Interested in following your journey. - John in Dallas

I sent you a message. Take care,

I’m stuck. I have two ROCKs. I can only see one in windows file manager so I have no idea how to transfer the library over. I have tried stopping the server. I must have one box off to see the other box. I’m thinking of just getting an external adapter for the internal drive on the old machine and connecting it ot the back of the new ROCK and just doing a transfer that way. Let me know, please.

Shouldn’t be the case. Do they have the same IP?

No, two separate ip addresses.
How would you look for it in explorer? If both answer to //rock (at least separately)?

I have not switched the account info, yet. I have them both ‘server stopped’.

Now I can’t remember if I set up a folder for my library in the new rock. the path is the same in old and new rock (\\rock\data\storage\internalstorage when in file manager? It is accessible, just not at the same time to move actual files over to it.

Use their IP addresses in File explorer instead of their hostnames (if they are both named ROCK)…

What @Geoff_Coupe said. In addition, I would be surprised if the router lets them both have the name “rock”. In any case, most routers provide a local DNS. Most likely you can rename the devices on the router’s admin page where it lists all devices on the network.

I thought of this last night in bed. I’ll give it a try.

I decided, overnight, to copy the library to an external SSD I have (not a bad idea to have several copies, right? I’m copying from that to the new rock in chunks. I’ll let this one set finish and then try the I.p. address thing and then copy from original drive to new drive. Thank you.

I’m getting 85 - 105 MB/s transfer from the external SSD to rock connected directly to a USB C port.

I’ll give old to new rock a try and see what speed I’m getting.

Update: THANKS!!! Yes, I.p. addresses in Windows file explorer does the trick! Pretty much the same copy speed as the external drive (but I like that I’m reading off my original drive). Thanks. Now we copy for a few hours and then see it this all matches up with my database I brought over. Both old and new box staying cool to the touch. I’m a little surprised the m.2 drive isn’t at least a little warm.

Thank you, again,

DONE!

Thank you all for getting me through this. A few wrong turns, here and there, but up and running. All playlists. All music, … everything working as before.

I went from a 2020 Gen8i5 (might even be Gen7, actually) with 1TB internal SSD fanless case to a Gen16i7 with 2TB M.2 second internal storage drive with fans - original nuc case. I’ll let it all settle and let you know how it seems over my last system.

Thank you SO MUCH. I had many tags, artwork, albums combined, albums I sort of ‘put together’, music files I mix using an old program MixMeister for workout music, … all of it. I was worried I couldn’t get it all transferred over, but I did.

I know it’s not an official box, but it’s working well. I don’t think I’ll ever need to upgrade or replace.

I just rebooted my ROCK and my playlists are now populated. WooHOO!!!
