New box set feature - thanks, omissions and improvements

This has been discussed at length , to try to summarise

  • Roon is an album based program
  • The concept of the album is core to Roon and is “Sacred”
  • NO changes / additions tro Roon can impact the concept of the Album

So with that in mind a Box Set is an ALBUM, containing a collection of discs and NOT albums as defined in Roon.

The requirement with Box sets was to somehow get the DiscSubtitle and artwork of each of the contained discs. Using its normal sources of metadata, this is difficult as the data in most cases simply isn’t available.

So Roon sets off and tries to identify each DISC as if it were an album in order to get 3 things, in order to build up the by disc header we now see and a more informative Disc No Dropdown

  • Disc Number
  • Disc Subtitle
  • Disc Artwork

In doing so it blurs the distinction between a Disc and an Album. Many boxes are indeed a collection of previously released albums so that is quite easy BUT box sets are not all equal, I could define maybe 6-8 different structures of boxes. Some allow the ID approach but many (especially classical) do not

The upshot of the box as an album is box based credits, box based images etc simply because the disc is NOT an album to have its own sub set of credits and images.

There are , and always have been, 2 approaches

  • Split a Box (album) into its component Albums and Lose The Box
  • Keep the Box as an album and Lose the Component Albums.

Nothing in that respect as changed. The current box set modifications are aimed at better navigation. The rest is supporting infrastructure and editors to support that goal.

Clear as Mud ??
