New (was back in 2021) iFi Zen Stream device

yes but a 50% restocking fee on a defective unit, really. are they going to try and lay it on someone else? they need to get credit from IFI. i have received 2 duds from these folks, $200 in in shipping and import fees. watch out

So you are not in Singapore then?

no i am not. Singapore has sent me 2 duds, and will not refund me. no class. i am from Beverly Hills Ca. so the customer service in this part of the world is very different. very dodgy a completely different mind set. loss of face ect. customer never right. i have had problems getting my computer fixed under warranty here in Asia. Apple in the States had to step in to resolve it. classy company

Maybe mention the lemon law to them…can google it

Also CASE

So many questions. Are you currently in the US or somewhere in Asia? lol

If you are in the US why are you ordering gear from Singapore and paying exorbitant import tax/duties?

hello
i am in Thailand. ZS not launched here yet. the nearest place was SGN. Thailand is audio hell, but has a lot of other attractions.

lemon law? here, lol. Farang always wrong here. it’s very corrupt in this part of the world. mostly military dictators rule behind a thin veil of ā€œdemocracyā€ unfortunately this mind set spills over into the market place and it’s you buy it you own it think. hardly any consumer protection laws. god forbid if you where to get into an accident.

Well I’ve lived here (Singapore) 30+ years… if you care not to do what I suggest…might be a last resort but you don’t have be rude Rudy!

not being rude. common knowledge. in the West we are free to speak the truth voice our opinions. but Asia is pivoting toward big brother in the North. sad to say. things are starting to get really interesting. they have never heard of the lemon law in Singapore. we have the FTC thank good. consumer protection laws. freedom of speech. sorry if i touched a nerve. but TREO are acting like cheap crooks. claiming now that the units worked prior to shipment. you can also drive a lemon of the lot. lol. this is why warranties exist in the first place. btw, i have shopped around Asia and you would be surprised to learn that they are novel. buyer beware. common knowledge that early ZS units where plagued with problems, and i am reading still are to some degree. just wanted to add the recently a guy got arrested in Thailand for posting a negative review of a resort on Trip Advisor. goes to show

Seeing as you seemingly can’t be bothered to do it yourself…here is a link. Frankly why you bought something made by a US or UK (based on their about info) company from half way around the world is beyond me.

If you are so aware of what you think generally happens in Asia then again I question why you would make a purchase.

Edit just saw a reply (not to me) that you are in Thailand…spent many many months there over the years too. So maybe my comment about buying halfway around the world is out of context. Thailand is a bit of an audio minefield I agree.

This is what threw me.

And personally I have troubleshot a ZS for a friend and was not impressed with it. I have other ifi products that are ok however, power related products, but probably wouldn’t buy the brand again.

my impression was that IFI would back me up, worse case scenario. thats why a took a chance on a Beta product. i did do some research on the Head Fi forum, but was assured by Mr. Buba Hyde who is a major voice on said forum that these where minor issues, so i went ahead with the purchase. no, it’s a great sounding product, but it’s still a work in progress… i am also very impressed with Roon. now listening only on headphones last night. and i am thinking of canceling now sans streamer, still sounds great. another minor quibble i have is that it’s near impossible to take gear home over the weekend here and hear it in your own system. in the States you can, you just secure it with a credit card.

i think they are designed in the Uk, but are manufactured in China like a lot of stuff. Chinese manufacturing is taking a hit now? or so i read. Apple is made in China but has strict quality control. and Apple America sent me a new computer whiteout hesitation when i had problems. not the case here.

The issue with many devices these days is that the hardware is released way before the firmware is even feature complete, never mind relatively bug free and stable. I recall in the early days of hard disk based video recorders taking a unit back due to half the features on the box front being absent. It was also impossible to use the device without it crashing and rebooting itself.
IFi are responsible for this state of affairs, regardless of place of manufacture.

Everything you said there :+1:t2:
The whole thing of get the hardware right and the software will catch up is total BS. It treats the paying customers with disdain. I would have happily been a beta tester for this and paid, because I can live with that. But for many user’s it just causes stress. I have stated I bought it for Roon and future HQP and that works perfectly, but the rest should have been coming in 2022.

promises, promises, IFI really dropped the ball on this. it’s been 5 months since launch, what’s holding them up? meantime us end users suffer

Software is apparently hard to get right.
Just ask Apple, Microsoft and Google.

I and several other people in my company have given up using our MacBook Air’s (2019) because Big Sur made them so unusable that almost nothing will run without stopping the laptop in it’s tracks.
Google seems to screw up everything it delivers on first two attempt’s because it wats the telemetry to make it work the way users need (even though many would give up after the first two botched efforts).
Microsoft has delivered Windows 11 with serious bugs and memory issues because they will fix them in 2022.

What kind of software world are we living in.

I agree, but we always seem to be buying on a promise. Stop it. Buy for what it is, not what it could be… perhaps then the manufacturers will get the message and sort things out before releasing.

And on Roon Readyness: earlier companies wouldn’t bother with certification, but it kinda worked. Then Roon clamped down, now (I get the impression that) no one bothers with certifying. The consumer buys a promise that never materializes. Who suffers?

Hi Mike I fully agree, but sadly companies often break things down the line with updates these days as well, so it might have worked when you bought it.

For me i brought the Zen only for Roon and HQP and they both work beautifully. Others bought it for Tidal and Spotify Connect and the future promise of Chromecast. They are the ones who have been mis sold because software is hard to complete.

More and more companies are hiding their previous firmware files now as well so you cannot even get get back to the previous working version.

What’s not to say that iFi have done everything they can and have been waiting on Roon or Google? Maybe they are doing additional testing after feedback? I agree that it would be helpful for an update or timescales but I understand why they don’t.

Others have articulated it better but it’s worth stressing…just don’t buy hardware on the promise of a software update for functionality that you need.

I didn’t need Roon certification and was encouraged enough with those early reviews and comments on here about its stability with Roon to buy it and test it myself. I’ve had it for a couple of months now and it’s been rock solid. Some slight oddities on setup but nothing major and I’ve used it in 3 different systems almost exclusively over wi-fi and it’s not missed a beat using Roon and occasionally Spotify.

Maybe I just got lucky as I’ve read plenty about PSU and connectivity issues but thought I’d mention for balance.
