Peppymeter (peppyalsa) VU Meters with Roon?

To get airplay working I enabled shairport in volumio so I can stream to the Pi via Airplay from Roon

However I stopped using peppymeter soon after I posted this as I found it a bit flakey and I ultimately I wanted to fill the screen with metadata, rather than fake vu meters.

I realized I had another issue causing it to not work. The meters have lost their fun after a couple songs lol.

How would I accomplish this using the HDMI output of my PI?
