I also use Roon with VPN away from home. Without Wlan this requires of course a lot of data volume. Ist there a way that Roon automatically reduces quality when I listen on my android smartphone?

No, the use of Roon outside of your home network is not supported at the moment. I would just copy my daily/weekly dose of music onto the smartphone instead. Maybe things may change in the future:

It would be great to be able to take the music away with us, via sync (or via streaming), directly to mobile devices. Space is not an issue for us lucky Android users whom have Micro SD card capability and for the rest, there’s always streaming. I have a great little 24 bit DAC in my Sony Z5 that sounds quite good for a mobile.
