No matter how many times I tried I could never get it to sound better than without it and I even bought the upgrade for $99. I also spent a lot of time researching and playing around with it, but ultimately it just sounded like the soul was sucked out of the system for me

Depending on your hardware, Dirac will still work.

I have an NAD M33 and the room correction on that is quite profound and carries through on roon.
