Roon Nucleus Backups Lost [Solved]

I replaced my 5 port Netgear switch with an 8 port and have everything internet going through the surge protector except my U-Verse router. It uses a cable with jacks that are smaller than the smallest RJ45 (RJ11/14 I think). I guess AT&T will replace it for free if it gets fried.

EDIT: I ordered a pair of adapter cables for RJ11 to RJ45. If they work, I will be able to send the router through the surge protector. They are 4 wire, so I think they will work with U-Verse.

I don’t think sending internet through the surge protector is going to work. While I haven’t noticed any issues with Tidal and Qobuz, we’re getting some pixilation with our U-Verse IPTV. This is with the surge protector between the router and switch.

Tomorrow I will have two RJ11 to RJ45 adapters to put the surge protector before the router, but I don’t see any reason to think that will work any better. It was worth a try.

Jim, I wouldn’t bother with the rj45/11 filters, this isn’t why you got the ups either :slightly_smiling_face:

But, if it works, why not? If it doesn’t, I can return the adapters to Amazon. They were $7.89 for the two of them.

Agreed, but TV pixelations probably indicate it’s killing your bandwidth. You’re right to experiment though :+1:

Another thing I could do is use my left-over Netgear 5-port switch and run the TV’s through it and leave the ethernet surge protection on the 8-port switch with everything else. I’ll play with it tomorrow and see.

You really only need surge protection on a cable that goes outside, eg phone line, cable, or DSL.

The U-Verse internet comes in via phone line. It runs around the outside of our house. I also have an ethernet wire that runs from the router out the back wall of our main bedroom, around the back of the house, and back in the family room to my Oppo 203, 65 inch LG OLED, Bose system, and Apple TV4K.

Looking good so far. I installed the RJ11 to RJ45 adapters and ran the incoming U-Verse internet through the UPS (surge protector) and to the U-Verse router. I have one cable out of the router to my 8-port Netgear switch. All ethernet goes through that switch.

Right now, I have three IPTV’s going plus Roon 24/192 from my Nucleus to Mojo 2 and Roon ARC also playing a 24/192. So far, no pixilation and no music drop outs or blips of any kind.

EDIT: After 6 hours of wife and I watching 2 TV’s, with me listening to Roon, and web surfing, so far, no pixilation or music blips. For whatever reason, surge protection seems to work with incoming ethernet signal, before the router.

There’s no need for surge protection on Ethernet lines. It does nothing. Nothing at all. Those jacks on UPSes/Surge Protectors are meant for old school POTS telephone lines that carried low voltage power as well and were vulnerable to surges. Modern networking gear does not have this issue. Your adapters are definitely going to kill throughput on your network.

(I’m an IT professional with a masters in cyber security, I work with networking gear all day. I would highly advise against routing your network switch through a UPS. I almost guarantee you just brought your NICs down to 10 megabit or 100 megabit, there’s no way you are getting gigabit throughput on your LAN right now.)

My internet is 50/12.

Your internet is, but your LAN is gigabit If the line going from the outside is going to the UPS and then from the UPS to the router that should be ok since while it won’t negotiate the way it should, you are provisioned for lower bandwidth anyway. But if it’s a line from the switch on the back of the router going to a UPS and then the UPS feeding a network switch that WILL affect the bandwidth on the switch. Regardless what you are doing is totally unnecessary and not good practice. I would advise not adapting any RJ-45 cables to RJ-11 and running them through a UPS. It’s just not the proper way to do things and isn’t recommended. Even if you don’t notice any issues, it just isn’t necessary to do that and has the potential to lead to issues for example if you increased your internet speed or got fiber internet.
