If the program asks the operating system for more memory but doesn’t release it when it’s not needed anymore, or the program simply needs more and more. Over time, this leads to RAM exhaustion and hence slowdown or crashes. In most programming languages this must be managed by the programmer and it’s more or less easy to make mistakes. Some program languages / execution environments manage it automatically, but this comes with its own problems.
