Tidal understands HiRes as MQA. That is problematic

I commented on your quote "My take on MQA has nothing to do with musical or production style, it’s about the codec, the marketing, the lies, and the desire to dominate.”

Bryan Lucy said there were lies, not I, so what is unclear?

Yes, Bryan Lucy said there were lies.
He, as a professional, has some insights on MQA.
Same is true for many other Professionals.

And I commented on his quote saying “Not sure there are outright lies and even if there are”, so why do you ask if he lied or lies?

Because I understood your answer in that way.
Now is ok.

dCS, Mark Levinson, Brinkman, Teac, Quad, PS Audio, Pro-Ject, NAD, Krell, Cary, Bluesound…

Must be so inconvenient :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I can’t speak for any manufacturers you’ve listed there but I can say PS Audio have openly said they support MQA (with the Bridge II network card) only to satisfy their customers (that wanted it) - not because they are fans of MQA.

So from this example, we shouldn’t assume that all manufacturers that support MQA are actually fans of it.

For the record I’m not really strongly for and against MQA. I still do play with it with Audirvana (1st unfold) but don’t feel too strongly either way anymore (after extended comparisons the last few months)

CD quality streaming via Tidal is still stellar.

It goes both ways, vendors that do not support MQA do not necessarily dislike MQA.

Of course, no disagreement there.

Not a single one of the big players!
If it is so good, where is the support by Yamaha, Sony, Pioneer, Onkyo, …?

How about a bit of research before posting?

Not necessary, take for example, Auralic was one of few early adopted in MQA until a disagreement between two parties turned sour, if you have read about CES 2016, you know what actually happened. Roon was once listed as MQA partner but no longer there anymore. Many of us has been waiting patiently for Roon roll out MQA but nothing happen. Some indications seem to relate to licensing issues.

MQA enforces very strict rules on licensing as well hardware specifications. Not all manufacturers are willing to come onboard.

Did you read the links I posted?
Short summary, Sony, Pioneer and Onkyo DO have products that support MQA for sale today.

That makes the quote below factually incorrect.

Onkyo and Pioneer are not the same company?

If Sony is on board I see no future for MQA. They are kind of a guarantee for sinking any new format.
That keeps me comfortable.

  1. I believe the correct name should be Brian Lucey.

  2. Since various manufacturers have been mentioned, I’d like to add Lumin and Esoteric. Speaking of Esoteric, they released a MQA firmware upgrade for N-01 a few days ago.

Yes, they are Onkyo & Pioneer Corporation but are tow different brands with some products just branded and others unique for one of the brands.

As for remark on Sony, that’s hillarious and a good point! :joy::joy::joy:

They are now. They didn’t used to be.

Auralic reverse engineered their own version of MQA most likely because they didn’t want to pay a licensing fee.

I’m not trying to be funny. I’m saying you can play an MQA file without unfolding it and I’ve seen a quote from Bob Stuart that it may still be a slightly better file.

Because that’s how it works. MQA is an end to end system for the full effect.

The divorce was a result of what happened in CES 2016, as described by Auralic CEO:
