Using any audio source with HQPlayer - Spotify, Amazon, Apple Music, YouTube Music, Deezer, Soundcloud [2021-2022]

Yep, I mentioned in same discussion above with @Chunhao_Lee I reproduced with Windows source

When it happens, does networkaudiod report “zero rate from source, using default” or “zero channels from source, using default”?

Because this happens sometimes and my workaround was to fall back to default in such case instead of stopping.

Will test. With the Windows source it was under Parallels on Mac so not a pure Windows test.

I’ll boot up my old Windows laptop and test properly.

I haven’t tried a Linux source before so I might as well be thorough and try that.

Ok tested Windows properly (not Parallels this time) and can reproduce same issues with Windows and also Linux source.

I don’t see any of those messages on the screen when I hookup RPi4 to monitor. See below though

Yes, those are just kernel messages. But the one I’m talking about is from networkaudiod. It spits out quite a bit of information. You can for example stop the service and run it from console instead. Or use “journalctl -s networkaudiod”

Below screenshot is what I get when I run journalctl -S networkaudiod (failed to parse timestamp error). This is on the RPi4 uac2 input NAA. For HQP output, it is ALSA in this testing but I’ve always had same issue even with NAA OS output

On HQPlayer log side below, music starts correctly at 44.1kHz fine without issue and then the noise issue comes with the switch to 48kHz. But from the HQP log, nothing seems obviously wrong, even though sound quality turns bad (like when you are trying to find FM radio station but are not quite on the current frequency - you hear both music with bad noise - which is different to the Chord DAC USB interface kind of issue which is pure white noise blast without music)

That rate switch is just not visible in the NAA log above…

One can also redirect networkaudiod output to a specified log file using NETWORKAUDIOD_LOGFILE environment variable.

What I’m wondering if there’s anything different between working and non-working rate switch.

Ok so I edited /etc/default/networkaudiod and added:
NETWORKAUDIOD_LOGFILE=/tmp/networkaudiod.log

Will test

I can’t ssh to NAA OS (added user by useradd) but I assume there is no ssh support on NAA OS?

So I tried HQP OS image for RPi4 and disabled hqplayerd but uac2 input doesn’t work at all - it doesn’t show up on Windows or iOS as UAC2 DAC, the way it works with NAA OS

You did something with the RPi4 NAA OS image a few weeks ago in our discussions about kernels - maybe your change hasn’t been implemented into HQP OS image yet?

I need ssh because it makes it simply to copy networkaudiod.log to my iMac desktop

Maybe future NAA OS can add ssh ? (unless it should be working already for me?) - especially useful for copying networkaudiod.log to desktop

Until I can ssh screen photo will have to do.

Yes I do see this same message ! See below

How to implement the workaround that you describe? How do I fallback to default instead of stopping?

This noise issue isn’t a sometimes thing though - as @Chunhao_Lee verified in his testing, the noise is easily guaranteed within a few tracks of sample rate changes

<input address="input-naa" channel_offset="0" channels="2" device="USB Audio Class 2" format="pcm" ipv6="1" name="USB Audio Class 2" pack_sdm="0" period_time="0" samplerate="44100" short_buffer="0" type="network"/>

The workaround is there, as you can see from the message. The issue is that at rate change, there’s a sampling rate change to 0 Hz 0 channels. This used to make HQPlayer stop. Then I implemented workaround to just blindly go with default values, but that’s not very good approach either.

Windows is particularly slow in setting up the sample rate etc. It seems to start USB audio packet flow, and then later realize that it should actually define some sample rate, channels, etc for it.

I need to figure out what to do…

Actually I don’t remember anymore. You could check with “uname -r” if the kernel is different version. It could be that I kept NAA OS at 5.10. But HQPlayer OS should be 5.15 throughout.

I see ! Well at least we have something, that it might be.

If you have something to test on RPi4 NAA image just let me know and I will test !

@jussi_laako any idea if this USB to Ravenna RME interface could work for USB input into HQPlayer ? (with auto sample rate switching of course  )

Maybe would need Windows/macOS in between for the Win/Mac Ravenna driver to feed HQPlayer ?

Unless Ravenna version of HQP OS could do it alone?

I don’t see that as very beneficial, because you are always primarily hitting limitations of UAC and limitations of OS audio APIs. And that doesn’t work around these at all.

Chris of AS was writing about using Ravenna for HQPlayer inputs already earlier, with the Merging driver.

i had hqplayer embedded 4.30.3-x64gen installed on up gateway

IfI zen stream > USB 3.0 otg microb > HQPeOS upboard gateway > run convolution/pcm upsample done on the HQPeOS upboard > USB 2.0 out to Holo May dac.

i upgraded to hqplayer-embedded-4.32.5-x64sse42.7z today

now when changing input to USB Audio Class 2 it Says failed and hqplayer OS crashes and needs to be restarted. cannot get audio out.

Went back to hqplayer embedded 4.30.3-x64gen and all is well

When you say all is well, what are you feeding Up Gateway, from your Zen Stream?

Airplay ? Fixed at 44.1kHz sample rate?

i can feed it anything from airplay 44.1 to qobuz via mconnect or roon 192khz upto 384k the limit of ifi zen stream. all to sinc-m , NS9 1.5mhz

When using Qobuz via mConnect , do you ever get static / white noise when sample rates auto change ?

sometimes not all the time i can hear a slight static click sound. but its very slight

Can you add this Qobuz playlist below of mine, to your Qobuz.

Then play in mConnect.

Each track alternates in sample rate.

Only play 3 seconds of each track and then press next track, to run through the playlist.

https://open.qobuz.com/playlist/6641931

And let me know if you get the static/white noise issue ?

Won’t be an issue with Airplay since that is fixed at 44.1kHz still
