What we are listening to [2017]

I’m not there yet. Keep focusing on the unrealized potential on the table.

But right now…

Very interesting.
He is another guy I have not really picked up on, even though he plays on lots of albums I have.
Highlights again the power of traversing the relationship graph.
And the vast size of that graph.

Yup. Discovered him via Avishai Cohen (Bass, not Trumpet), and Jason Lindner. Some of his stuff doesn’t land for me. This one was pretty good.

What is the “relationship graph”, have I missed something?!

This is what I’m listening to at the moment…

Hannah Reid‘s voice is amazing. London Grammar are up there amongst my contemporary favourites. Check out this cover of Chris Isaak‘s Wicked Game (c2013)

It’s on this covers CD BBC Radio 2’s Sounds Of The 80s

“Relationship graph” is just technical jargon for what we do when we go to an album’s Credits and click on a musician or composer, and see what else he or she has done, and then click on one of those albums and look at those Credits, and so on. In this case, as @Brian suggests, I have several albums with Avishai Cohen, and if I look at Credits I would have seen Mark Guiliana on percussion, and if I clicked on him I would have seen him on other albums like Brad Mehldau and Jason Lindner, or I could have looked in Tidal and seen him play with others but also seen his own work.

A “graph” is a term in mathematics for “nodes” (things of any kind) connected by vectors (relationships of any kind, like “plays on” or “member of” or “child of” or “likes”). It underlies social networks, but is widely used in all kinds of solutions, from epidemiology to computer system management to music libraries.

This is at the heart of Roon’s conceptual model. But there is not a user interface that draws that graph; we have discussed that, there are interesting visualizations for it and I have sometimes shown those in other circumstances, but it is very geeky. Better to just show the relationships like Roon does. But we are aware of the graph.

A little bit of jargon.

Still miss Esbjorn…

Me too! That was an untimely loss like no many others. Sometimes I wish that artists that talented were banned from taking any risk, not even for a second.
