I love Op.132 “Heiliger Dankgesang” with its moving hymn for him who has recovered from a life-threatening illness.
you got me curious so I gave it a try. definitely different from Vivaldi
let’s try her Live Acoustic EP next

This was the first Tristan i’ve heard “preparing” for a live performance in 1990 i think it was, so it still is very special to me.
Bernstein works miracles with the orchestra. Despite the slow pace, the tension is always felt. Behrens maybe not in the same league as Nilsson or Varnay but imho not far off. Flagstad and Mödl were very different species.
We only could wish we even have a tenor like hofmann today.
This Tristan was very much criticized back in 1982, some said it was even unacceptable. Maybe because in the same period 2 other beautifull Tristans were released; Goodall and Kleiber.
Finally in 2018 the video over 36 years was released, i own the Blu-ray.
A landmark recording, the first by EMI using the new technology of recording tape.
Searingly intense and heartbreaking and for many the “only” recording of the Tristan.
Flagstad at 57 past her prime was in bad health but still had a huge and rich voice. In 1952 only matched by Martha Mödl in the Bayreuther live performance with Ramon Vinay as Tristan conducted by Karajan, also 1 of my favourite recordings.
Ludwig Suthaus is the real moving heroic Tristan almost in the same league as Vinay at that time. Although Vinay is within the very select group of heroic tenors with Vickers, Lorenz and Melchior.
This one is my no. 1 favourite recording. An electrifiyng, gripping, thrilling experience. With the two '60’s stars Nilsson and Windgassen. Böhm’s Bayreuther Ring is conducted with the same searing hot intensity.
I’ve listened to the Bernstein yesterday, Furtwangler today and Böhm is in queue for tomorrow. I can’t listen to any other music before or after a Tristan.

What a great posting, thank you very much! I haven’t listened to the Bernstein Tristan, but will do so.
