Now to a more modern kind of madrigal… listening to this you’ll feel as if it were not 450 years removed from the kinds of Monteverdi, Wert and Luzzaschi…

Another good recommendation that necessitated a further trip to Bandcamp.
Just purchased this terrific 10-cd compilation of English Renaissance choral music performed by The Sixteen, one of the great English interpreters of this repertoire. Hyperion, which does not participate in streaming services, is now offering the set as a FLAC download for a very reasonable £15 (about $20).
The Sixteen, led by Harry Christophers since their founding in the late 1970s, signed their first recording contract with Hyperion, so these performances span the early '80s to the early '90s. The music of Fayrfax, Sheppard, Mundy, and, of course, Taverner is featured. Right now I’m discovering the lovely music of Robert Fayrfax, which is new to me.

This is why I can’t stop my stupidly expensive and inconvenient vinyl habit. This 1972 Japan reissue has a bit of ring-wear and foxing on the cover, but the inserts and photos are all intact. These pictures are just beautiful. Both discs are NM; it’s not just a play-through when I get examples like this off the shelf, it’s a complete experience.
