nice one - she does a great version of ‘He called Me Baby’
Yeah, her Muscle Shoals recordings are sooo much better than her later disco hits (e.g. Young Hearts Run Free)!
In the same vein, there’s a series of compilations called ‘Where Country Meets Soul’ - I think there are 3 of them - They are worth checking out if you’re not familiar with them :
Thanks, will check these out!
Edit: not on Tidal or Spotify in the Netherlands…
I am impressed with this recent musical discovery, a release from 2018 dedicated to beautiful madrigals and instrumental music from the very early Italian Baroque. The Italian soprano Silvia Frigato sings this music expertly, and I find the accompaniment by Alessandra Rossi Lürig’s ensemble Accademia D’Arcadia tasteful and ideal. This is in fact an ensemble I hadn’t heard before, but I have seen that they have two releases with music by Alessandro Grandi on Arcana which I certainly will explore.
The album’s title Et manchi pietà (there is no compassion) alludes to the general theme of the included music—the cruel treatment of women. This is put in context with a strong female personality of those first years of the beginning 17th century; Artemisia Gentileschi (1593–1653) was a painter, famous in her own time, reputed as one of the most accomplished painters of her time, who had been raped in her youth and who had then participated at the trial of her rapist.
This is not normally my thing, but having discovered this through Roon metadata work (all those \\\\ !!!), and reading an ostensibly “Emperor’s New Clothes” review from TiVo, I gave it a spin this morning.
Although not linked to the TIDAL and Qobuz editions in Roon, the TiVo review is here on allmusic.
Electronic synth sounds and beats. Good stuff.
This needs no introduction; Rinaldo Alessandrini’s Concerto Italiano is very well-known and much loved, and Sara Mingardo’s contralto may well be the most impressive voice in baroque repertoire… This certainly is one of my desert island albums…
…if you admire Sara Mingardo as I do, here’s an album very much opposed to her usual baroque fare… The chamber arrangements of Mahler’s music were done by Arnold Schönberg (Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen) and Rainer Riehn, a pupil of Schönberg’s (Kindertotenlieder).

It is rather good, glad to see the love for TBR speading.
One of the most consistent bands of the 90’s and 2000’s and it’s no secret one my all time favourite acts. Back to the beginning and their fabulous lofi debut Peng! When I first got this I never new what an enduring affect it would have on me nor how they as a band would evolve and grow, cross over styles and change the course of their music with each subsequent release. Even though this lacks the superb vocal interplay of Mary Hansen that latter albums it’s still such a great album in their rosta, the really didn’t make a bad record. But not sure what the remaster brings I like my lofi vinyl verion. But hey. Resistance!
