As a great lover of mainly classical but also some pop music I have amassed some 17,000 hours of music files. All FLAC, with a growing number of 24 bit files among them. Two days ago I started the two-week-trial of Roon, having worked with MinimServer (great software by the way, and very classical-firendly) for the last couple of years. I am as yet undecided if I will buy a Roon subscription. It seems a lot of money to me.
I have spent years in perfecting the tags of all my music files, even wrote some scripts for MediaMonkey to automate some of the more tedious tasks. At this moment Roon is still busy adding music to the Roon Core library. This seems to take days. The results are not always perfect. Perhaps I should change the settings so that my own tags are considered more important than Roon’s own metadata that seem to lean rather heavily on the Allmusic database.
That’s what puzzling me: how come I would have to pay 500 bucks for a lifetime subscription to Roon while RoonLabs only writes the software and the boys and girls at Allmusic will for ever have to maintain an evergrowing database of literally ALL music that’s been issued worldwide. Quite the more tedious task, I would say. So does Roon pay Allmusic for their efforts? I wonder…
