Your screenshot shows a whole bunch of endpoints all associated with the IP address of 192.168.68.72 - is that the IP address of the Casaserver?
If so, it appears as though it is correctly telling Roon that it has the endpoints/zones available for use.
As @GregD says - why don’t you enable some of these zones to test if you can send different audio streams to them simultaneously. If that works, then you should be able to use Roon to drive these zones and also group them if required.
I think that you are currently testing Roon on your Mac, and this is also running Roon Server (which is producing that screen of the audio devices available). Be aware that if you moved to a Nucleus One, the hardware in that unit is unlikely to be powerful enough to stream to all your zones simultaneously.
So if you keep your amps you’d need something like 12 WiiM pros. If you replace the amps 3 Marantz M4s would work.
Unlike the casa, roon doesn’t do matrix routing or provide AirPlay endpoints. So you can’t stream from a phone or Spotify to the ceiling speakers. Don’t want to upset your kids (is you have them).
@Jim_F you can attach multiple usb DACs to a suitable computer to get multiple endpoints, although if they are the same make it can be confusing!.
I don’t know what the limit is, although I had some issues connecting 3 to a raspberry pi and settled on 2.
I now have 4 raspberry Pis acting as 8 endpoints.
My Pis each have a HATs and and usb spdif device so it’s easier to know which output is which (and I can turn my DACs off to save power without Roon disabling the endpoint).
Of course using off the shelf roon ready devices like WiiM is a lot more straightforward!
A bit of an update. I haven’t had the opportunity to switch out the Casa and replace it with the Mini, but yes, I can enable each of the speaker zones and stream right from the Roon server. With this in mind, it may be pointless to swap the Casa out. I’ll update further.
Geoff that may be the case, but there are some bugs that I need to figure out. I’ve been testing the system by playing tracks from my Mac and also from my iPhone app. The bug is, it keeps playing tracks, random tracks not initially selected, even though the player is stopped. I have to close the server in order to stop the playback. I have no clue yet as to how that can occur, but I’m working on it lol. I am going to swap out the systems and see if the Mini can see the zones individually. I think that would be a cleaner as everything would be on the Apple platforms. The Casa is a Windows mini PC. There may be some cross platform compatibility issues happening.
It seems something else is happening. I disabled the switch you suggested, however when I switch the speaker set - playing in my office and then switch to master bedroom - the music continues to play in my office, does not start playing in the master bedroom and the Roon Server shows nothing is playing and there is a loss of function of the controls. The only way to get the playback to stop is by shutting down the server.
No - the switch is at the bottom on the Zone Queue screen.
To open the Zone queue, click the icon shown as “1” in the Play bar - that opens the Queue screen, and the switch is at the bottom of the screen marked as “2” here.
Another question - should the Mini work for me, can I access the server from another Mac? I installed the server software on the second Mini and discovered I can only run it on one machine at a time. Since the server will be headless, can I only interface with it via the phone/ipad app? Same question applies to the Nucleus when I receive it.
When you install Roon on a computer, it installs two Roon programs. One is the Roon server and the other is the Roon client/control. You can run the Roon client/control on multiple computers, phones, and tablets. The Roon server program can be installed on multiple computers, but can only be authorized on one computer with one Roon subscription. You can authorize another server but will be asked to unauthorized the other when you do this.
Roon’s zone selector works a bit differently to other apps, when you switch from office to bedroom you’re not changing where the currently playing music outputs, if you want to do that you need to use the transfer zone button.
In Roon you tend to select the zone first and then control what is playing in it. This starts to make more sense if you think of what happen when each room / zone is playing different music.
Think of each zone as having it’s own stream and own set of controls. If you simply switch from bedroom to office without first hitting pause or stop, the music in the bedroom will continue playing, that’s intentional.
Well I guess you figured it out … I didn’t read the documentation. Poor form of me for coming on here and asking questions before doing so. Your links did point me in the right direction though. So thanks for that and thanks to you and others for the help you’ve offered.
I’m happy to say everything is working as I had hoped. I have full control of the system and all of the zones. I do have to interface with the Casa box, but that will only be to set up additional “Room Groups” if desired. There doesn’t appear to be a way to link the zone speakers in the Roon app. But using the Casa app, I can create additional room groups - groups speaker sets - ie. I can group my office with the Master bedroom and that will appear as a new singular Airplay room and it is accessible by the Roon Server. I had already created party room groups for just indoor parties and one that combines indoor speaker sets with outdoor speaker sets.
The Roon Server is a gem. It compiled thousands - almost 10k tracks - I had spread across three hard drives. Some of them have incorrect artwork, but from what I think I understand, when these tracks are played, the Roon software will analyze the track and make corrections.? I also know there is a way to correct them by editing the artwork and selecting one that matches. I’ll work this out as I go.
I’m on day 2 of the trial and awaiting delivery of the Nucleus. I will used that as the server and hide it away in the component cabinet. I’ll use the various Roon device apps to interface with that - laptop, computer and iPad. I have an iPad mini for guests to use during a party to play what they want. The Roon app interface is much more user friendly than the Casa app - well for the uninitiated.
The Casaserver is a neat little appliance. At the time, it was the perfect choice for me with a fully wired speaker setup throughout a pretty large house that is actually two distinct and seperate structures, to manage and distribute audio in a more user friendly way than wall panel buttons. The Casa provides 16/44.1 thru 24/192- FLAC and ALAC lossless formats, so everything sounds great. I’m really happy it works with the Roon Server. All is now perfect in my music world!
Edit: I just discovered how to link rooms in the Roon interface. This couldn’t be better!
Note that you can only group zones together that use the same protocol: RAAT with RAAT, AirPlay with AirPlay and so on. You can’t group a Zone using RAAT with a Zone using AirPlay for example. This is because it would be a technical challenge to keep these mixed Zones kept in audio synchronisation.
