I’m setting up a 2nd residence - a retreat center of sorts, so I’ll never be in 2 places at the same time. If I want Roon in both locations, I’ll set up a ROCK in both locations. The question is, do I need 2 licenses or can I just log out of one server and log into the other?
If you want to use both servers at the same time, you will need two subscriptions. Otherwise, you can use one subscription and switch the servers back and forth on the single subscription. You can do that from either location.
If you do decide to purchase a second subscription, make sure you do so on the same user account so you can share your Roon database back the forth by backing up and restoring, etc.
Brilliant. Just as I thought but needed a confirmation. So thank You!
I have two properties (and have had three). I considered multiple Roon licenses, but decided against it due to the complexity of syncing backups between the locations. The alternative is to run Roon server on a laptop and move it when you move. I physically move my Nucleus sometimes.
The alternative is using ARC when at the beach house or ski lodge (or wherever), or just going with Qobuz Connect, Apple Music, etc. when at the secondary location.
I have 4 Roon servers and 3 Roon subscriptions. Backups are a non-issue since each server has it’s own Roon backup routine and backs up to it’s own location independent of the others. Of course, if you restore from one server to another, you will lose whatever was on the server that gets restored to.
Sure, if you are not interested in synchronizing your playlists, etc. that works. Not being able to sync state painlessly was the blocker for me.
This is what I’m doing for now.
I have an Eversolo DMP-A6 at the secondary house, and I was able to add ARC as an app to that streamer. (It’s android-based, so you can add third-party APK apps.)
So it’s pretty seamless.
Just make sure, that you get the 2nd subscription under the same account and do not setup a new account for the second subscription.
