A List of Music NOT on Streaming Services to Find at Record Stores

Whoa…I need to keep an eye out for this CD, it’s expensive given how much CD prices cost! My local record store has a bi annual sale, and I picked up several cd’s for 25 cents! Also met Jay Leno there today, who was shopping for some vinyls! https://www.discogs.com/sell/release/9750141?ev=rb

since I got into Japanese jazz I realised how much music is actually not on streaming services (Tidal, Qobuz, Apple Music etc), can’t be purchased digitally from sites like highresaudio and basically everything else where you would purchase western music.

there is some of it on Japanese sites that sell digital files but its really a far cry from what is available on vinyl. so just get the CD and rip it to your own library right? nope. even if I where to spend those absolutely insane prices on Discogs and eBay (sometimes there are used CDs for 50-200 euro before shipping and import fees) there is still so much stuff not available .

drives me absolutely crazy sometimes. there are some really cool artists like Norio Maeda , Martha miyake, Yoshiko goto , Mari Nakamoto, Tsuyoshi Yamamoto and so many more that are actually popular artists and even known outside of Asia but there seems to be no interest to reissue their music.

but there is vinyl… I could buy mountains of LPs of stuff that has no digital release anywhere.

This is generally true for every genre from pre-digital times. Only artists above a certain level got digital reissues, unless artists took care themselves or a specialist label took an interest. I mean, there are mountains of pre-2000 Austrian indie pop/rock alone that was never digitized, and it’s the same for every regional non-mainstream culture. Question is, of course, how many people would even be interested in listening to an indie band from some Austrian small town that managed to publish a cassette or a 500 units vinyl run in 1992.

Absolutely. Super annoying really. You get 35 versions of a insert popular artist release that is available on every streaming service known as well.

But at the same time there are these outstanding artists that are very well recorded, and there is if you are lucky enough a 40 year old vinyl or someone might have uploaded a “print on demand” cd that is OOP for 25 years somewhere.

Artist is still alive and there is interest in the music but it seems to much of a issue to sort out license issues? …

Makes me really consider getting a turntable and start importing LPs. But at the same time I could throw all my money at CDs and digital files.

Currently I have some CDs and digital files that I purchased from Asia that aren’t even on discogs or YouTube.

Are these artists also not on Spotify? I’ve found, at least for a lot of Japanese indie music, they only seem to upload to Spotify.

Some artists have some stuff on streaming services here and there and apple music has some stuff that isn’t available anywhere else but often only in AAC.

But plenty is not on qobuz, tidal, KKBox , apple , Spotify.

Even though this is from a label that did DSD transfers and had SACD releases.

Just look up the label “three blind mice” and artist’s like isao suzuki, hidefumi Toki, shigeko toya , ayako hosokawa.

CD reissues are often sold out within 1-2 years also.

Still glad reissues make their way to cd or Vinyl here and there . But prices in Europe at least are often ridiculous after shipping and import fees.

I posted most of John Zorn’s catalog was missing. As of last week there are now around 220 albums.

Wow, indeed :+1:

You’re probably aware by now, but John Zorn is back.

That’s the great thing about Roon, we are all free to create our own streaming service for ourselves and listen to our CD collecfions without fear of what the streaming companies decide to take down.

Apart from the times your internet’s down and your blocked from playing your own music via Roon.

I love this topic :+1:

One that I currently want that’s not on at least Qobuz & Tidal, I’m not sure about the others, is Budgie - Never Turn Your Back On A Friend.

Yeah that sucks a bit that it could not at least work without internet for a couple hours.

But a mobile hotspot on a smartphone works well enough for those few times a year this might happen.

I keep hearing the same drum beating with this response, whilst it might work for some it doesnt work well enough in my household due to poor cellular reception and the fact all my kits not accessible enough for this to be any where near practical to tether my phone and I would be without a device I need for other purposes.

If you don’t already know about the significance of the audience interaction during Dylan’s “Royal Album Hall” concert (Bootleg Series Vol. 4) and listen to it on Tidal or Qobuz, you would be none the wiser because all these parts were cut out. To hear the real thing and to be able to follow discussions/articles/books about it, you need the CD (dunno about downloads).

That’s a real shame.

One my my favourite bands.
I’ve got all their first UK pressings. I started collecting decades ago.
They are on roon now.
Their early work is exemplary.

I used to have a music business. I sold rare underground UK prog psych and krautrock.
There’s so much amazing amazing music out there that’s totally unknown to the masses.
Krautrock is especially a alluring genre with all it’s sub genres.
You’ll not see much anywhere with streamers
I’ve got a massive collection of underground music as a consequence of my music business.
We used to travel all around the UK and sell at record fairs. Also did a lot of mail order.
Record collector brought in a lot of trade. The cost of posting ads in there was amazing. But needs must.
There’s thousands of underground UK and krautrock artists waiting to be found.
And then there’s psych.
Look and you will hear.

This is awesome! You’re collection must be amazing! Have you started uploading them to your Roon Core? What I love is that if I go to an indie concert and buy a CD from the show, I can now listen to it anywhere. Also, if you haven’t gone CD/record shopping in a while go out there, get some exercise and it’s always fun and sometimes exhilirating to find a CD you dont have on streaming services you love. The hunt is on, and anytime I take my friends with me, we always have a blast. It also costs peanuts to buy used CD when there’s a sale.

Sorry I only just saw your post. I get confused by the way this site reports comments etc.
I have been collecting for decades.
I just plug my HDD into the PC and then into the Lumin u2 mini which is my network bridge.
My best mate also rips vinyl. We started collecting together a very long time ago. When CD came along and people started ditching vinyl you could get first pressings for next to nothing. We went all over the country for our vinyl coming home with suitcases full of them.
Back then you got first pressings for around £1!!! Less sometimes.
So i have all my collections ripped now. Sometimes i contemplate getting the turntable out again. I would also have to buy a phono stage.
Would the SQ be massively better? I doubt it.
Sadly all of the vinyl emporiums have closed down now. I have little time for remasters and remixes. London is still good for vinyl but the bargains arent what they were.
Yes i remember those hunts for music. Great fun.
