BUMP!!! I still want this in case you don’t know kids!
Please give us this feature
For those unclear as to what this request is about, here’s a brief summary:
In the “Albums” view I can sort by “Artist” and other tags as well. If for example I add a “Focus” on the “Blue Note” label, I will only see Blue Note albums. And then I can sort all these Blue Note albums by “Artist”. What I would like is to also be able to sort by “Randomize” the Blue Note albums displayed - not the playback but the list I see on the screen.
Why? Because I have so many Blue Note albums in my library that I forget about them. I want this feature to bring up albums I added and then I can decide to play them or not.
Note that this is different from playing the list of albums randomly.
For me it’s quite simple. If this feature appears I’ll buy a Nucleus One. I check every release note in the hope that Roon want to take my money.
What surprises me about this feature request is the simplicity with which it could be addressed. I have a fair amount of software coding experience and I can easily come up with code that would do this. Of course I don’t know the Roon codebase, but I am pretty sure this is not a complex ask.
Other features I have requested, such as by-track DSP, would clearly be more complex to implement:
But this is the thing: Given Roon’s database and capabilities, I don’t think there is any other music player platform where you could achieve this.
So why not lean into Roon’s core differentiating features?
I would really like to see this too. It’s one of the (few) things I miss from Jriver. Frankly I find the Discover page to be useless (too much stuff I don’t need, showing the same things over and over again, showing stuff I just listened to, etc.). It’d be great if I could set up my album view with the Focus I want and then sort it randomly. That would really help me find stuff to listen to.
Please add your vote at the top if you haven’t already. Thx!
While I do love all the rich metadata and fancy ways to discover things to listen to, both within my library and on Qobuz; 85%-90% of the time I haven’t got time to disappear down an “also appears on” rabbit hole. I just want a random selection of my (ripped) cds, maybe filtered, so I can pick one and play it.
That’s why I 85%-90% of the time I use my emby server (with or without symphonium) to listen to music. I would like to use roon all the time, but since it’s all the same music anyway you have to use what works, right?
To echo a couple of posts up. When you add sort by random I will buy a nucleus one. It’s as simple as that. ![]()
Interesting. I had not heard of Emby server. Looked it up and it seems similar to Plex, which I use as Roon ARC always crashes on my iOS devices (apparently my library is too big?
).
Curious how you play Emby to a main system with a DAC.
Also, what do you mean with or without Symphonium? As far as I can tell it is a brand of IEMs?
You are correct Emby is similar to Plex and in my experience more stable without all the unnecessary mcguffins. I stream it to my main system via a wiim ultra using dlna (and other wiims in other rooms).
Symphonium is an android app that has all the good features from plexamp (smart playlists, configurable settings for mobile streaming cache etc) that Emby’s native app doesn’t have. And all the good stuff emby has that Plex doesn’t (dlna streaming, playlist importing etc) too. I’m not sure if there is anything similar for iPhone.
I have lifetime subscriptions to roon, emby (and Plex for that matter but don’t use it). Both roon and emby run on identical mini pcs running Ubuntu server, hard wired into the network with synced external hard drives so the music libraries are exactly the same. It makes no difference which I use for listening.
But let’s be honest, while I really like emby especially the stability, it’s primary focus is movies. I’d much rather use it for movies and roon to play music. But see above haha
I think there has been this request for some time now. I often use Lyrion for this feature.
Plex has Plexamp for music-centered playback (which is my only use of Plex). However, it cannot play to a DLNA/UPnP endpoint to my knowledge which is a big miss in my opinion.
So many solutions of this sort. The issue is I really like the focus feature in Roon. For example focus on a label (eg Blue Note) and shuffle those albums in the album view. All other solutions are just things I will not really use unfortunately.
It’s amazing that Roon has been unable to implement this feature, which would be useful for all users and which many have been requesting for years.
Right? I’ve made many reasonable feature requests with many users supporting them. Crickets…
I’d still like to see this as well! I’ve been using Roon daily for years. Every single time I interact with my albums (frequently), I think to myself “gee, I sure wish I could sort these randomly”. Then I poorly enact my own randomization by giving the trackball a little spin
And you probably always end up in the same neighborhood of albums… How can this feature be so hard to add vis a vis how many people would want it?
If someone wants the feature then VOTE ABOVE please. Not sure that would make any diff, but it sure wouldn’t hurt.
Desperately want this! Sort option are trivial to implement and there is no reason for Roon not to acknowledge the multiple ways we all approach discovery.
Where do we vote?
