Airplay connecting but not playing no sound

Good Afternoon Roon Community, I am hoping a wise community member can help me solve this issue.

I have two Roon cores operating, one on a Mini PC (#1) and one on my Standard Desktop Computer (#2).
Details of both machines follow:
#1. Roon ver: 1.8 legacy Build 1126
Core machine: Beelink Mini PC 12 PRO running Win 11
RAM:16 GB
Processor:Intel N100 Processor
HD type and size: 500GB
Location of music files: Internal SSD 2TB
Connection: Ethernet via TP Link unmanaged 8 port switch to a TP Link RE200 Internet Extender, then ethernet cable to the Ikea Symfonisk Bookshelf Speaker
Accessed via Roon Remote Legacy App via Android Phone

#2. Roon ver: 1.8 legacy Build 1126
Core machine: Win 10 Pro
RAM:16 GB Dual channel
Processor: Intel Core I5 Sandy bridge
HD type and size:Various but main C is SSD Samsung 860 EVO 1TB
Location of music files: Terramaster NAS F4-423.
Connection: Ethernet via Router (ZTE Router) then to a TP-Link AV2000 Gigabit Passthrough Powerline Starter Kit and into a WiiM Pro Plus with line out to Denon AVR S660H
Accessed via Desktop PC Roon Core App V1.8

My issue started a couple of months ago when first using the Mini PC (1) and playing music via Grouped Airplay devices being an Ikea Symfonisk Speaker (located in bedroom) and WiiM Pro Plus / Denon AVR S660H via airplay, one day it just stopped working and by that I mean it starts but no time is elapsed via the counter on the screen and no sound via either unit. A picture helps so please review below.

.

Devices listed under Roon Cores:

I have tried the following:

Reboot Ikea Unit
Reboot Router
Reboot Mini PC with Roon Core
Rebboted the TP Link RE200 WiFi Extender
replaced / switch Ethernet cables
Checked and confirmed (working perfectly) TP Link Unmanaged 8 port switch
Confirmed all units are under same subnets for both Roon Cores
Tried DSP within the Roon Cores both on and off no difference.
I can confirm that i can play music via Sonos streaming to the same unit without issue and i can also stream music via Android mobile phone using an app called Airmusic to the same unit via Airplay using a number of streaming services (Spotify / Tidal) or via own music collection located on phone.

Annoying, yes but up until today i had a workaround and that was that I could play the music or Radio stations on my Desktop PC Roon Core via the Grouped units (Ikea Symfonisk Bookshelf Speaker & WiiM Pro Plus / Denon AVR S660H via airplay) and it would work, flawlessley, but as at today, it has stopped working with the same situation as described above on the Mini PC.

Please note that this forum is my last chance to save my sanity, I have scoured the web, have scoured through the Roon forums, AVS forums and anything else I could think of over the past couple of months but to no avail.

A couple of thoughts:

  1. this issue seems to have started around the time that Roon released and upgraded to Airplay 2, just wondering if that may have caused an issue, but then why did my desktop PC work for the past couple of months.
  2. I get a gut feeling that the issue possibly maybe Network related like something is blocking the signal from playing, but I can confirm that the Mini PC has no Anti Virus software and have checked defender setting in firewall to make sure not blocked and on my desktop PC I am running Eset and have turned it off, allowed all network activity through firewall etc and still no luck.

I apologise for the long post, but i am hoping the combined “Brains Trust” of Roon members maybe able to offer a solution or fix to my issue.

Thanking you all for your time and any assistance offered.

You are running a two year old build of Roon 1.8. How would that have been updated to AirPlay 2? No, that is not the issue. Only Roon 2.0 recent builds incorporate the unofficial third party implementation of AirPlay 2 sender capability.

Now, one of your other devices may have received a software update that has affected its AirPlay (2) receiver capabilities, and that has trickled upstream to affect compatibility with Roon.

@WiWavelength, thank you so much for your response. I was using the Legacy versions of the Android App, but they may have updated via a Google playstore update that i was not aware of. Thank you for the tip, i will check this out and advise back.

No, you are missing the point. Roon is not updating any of the Roon 1.8 software or handheld apps. Those are Legacy — just as the name indicates — and are locked at ~2022 update levels.

So, if any software updates broke Roon’s unofficial AirPlay (2) functionality for you, those updates were to your other equipment, such as Denon, Ikea, or WiiM.
