I found several notes were people asked about sorting of albums in Roon but they were most from 2021 or older. So I am wondering if this was addressed in the meantime. When opening Roon and going to >My Albums its sorted By artist which is fine. But then the albums under that Artist are mostly sorted alphabetically. But mostly means not always. How come? Or what is the logic? By date added, by date released, by what? And other are absolutely perfectly sorted. See below. The live albums are by date until 2023-5-13 to 2023-02-01… but then again by date
The albums within an artist (in My Albums - Sorted by Artist) should be sorted by release date. And whether the Release Date or Original Release Date is used depends on the setting in Settings > General > Browser Sort Preferences > Album Dates for Sorting.
OK. I tried it out and yes, looks like this is their way of sorting. Thanks a lot for the insight. Better to know how it’s sorted than just wonder what the logic might be.
In general I am not really sure when which record was released. It might be useful here and there to have it sorted by «release date». But most of the time I guess by name (alphabetically) might be more useful.
So in case anybody at Roon reads this one day. Guys I really would appreciate if I could choose how I would like my albums sorted. i.e. by artist/album name would be wonderful. Actually like you sort your albums on a shelf. By genre… meaning Classic/pop-rock…/Jazz and in these categories by artist then album names.
Especially if you have live recordings, release dates might often be useless, the show date is probably the only thing that would matter.
I know. I can also search for the exact album or title.
But I would imagine that to add another search mode like by album title, by recording artist, by performance date, etc cannot be extremely difficult. Specifically as album title would simply be alphabetical like artist name. But as you mentioned it should be open old or everyone to choose how one wants to have them sorted.
Got to remember that, depending on your library, some of the metadata necessary for the sorting may be missing. For instance, I sort by original release date. Many albums don’t have that metadata, particularly older albums. They may instead have a release date of the CD version. So whenever I add an album I make sure it has the original release date which is usually available on the internet somewhere.
Yes I realised this. Some was missing, or others were released 20 years later. So I was looking for a show from 1981, but it was released in 2019… si useless to search within the early 80’s and hope to find it. Therefore that was my hope, I could search by name of the CD were in the title the date would be the first thing, then I could immediately find it. Or even batter have (especially) a date of recording then I could search by date of the shows! But unfortunately that seems not the case. …yet
Did you “search” or use the filter? You should use the filter with 2023 and see what you get. Dates to work correctly, I’ve found, need to be like 2023/05/12 the “-” sign sometimes messes things up.
I know I can use filters, but my point is that when under «My Albums» I would rather see them sorted by artist and then their records «alphabetically». As discussed above yes there are times when «recording date» or «release date» might be handy. Therefore I would like given the choice of sorting.
As for the date format, most my formats are in 2023/02/22 but when choosing rooms format it’s mostly 2023-02-22: At least in the titles. I’m not sure how it appears in the release date sorting as the dates are entered in individual cels for year, months, day.
