Allo DigiOne as a replacement for HiFiBerry DigiPro 2

Hello all,

I’m considering the DigiOne signature as a replacement for a HiFiBerry DigiPro 2. Right now the HiFiBerry is mounted on a RPi that is mounted on a display. The whole system is running Ropieee. The Pi and the Display are using separate power supplies.

My question is: if I get the Shanti and the DigiOne signature, can I just drop the DigiOne in and use the Shanti to power the DigiOne and the Pi? I’m mostly concerned about it being a drop-in solution.

Thanks!

The Shanti has the dual power supplies needed for the DigiOne Signature- and will also power the Pi.

I expect the display will also be fine - although I don’t have first hand experience.

However Allo are no longer active - so you may have difficulty sourcing a new Shanti / DigiOne, although they did have some remaining stock.

You can sometimes find used examples - although be aware that support / replacement components may be tricky to find.

The Pi2Design Pi2AES is a currently supported alternative.

Is that now the case? I’ve found some threads indicating that the coax on the PI2AES was non-functional with Ropieee (though those threads may be out of date). Perhaps @spockfish could comment?

Oh, and Allo seems to have re-branded as Rabas Technology – DigiOne boards are available at their web site. I’d give a link but I don’t remember if links to businesses are allowed.

I think the Rabas site may be WIP.

There is a London address which doesn’t look real.

Plus the product list includes a lot of Allo’s very old products - so I suspect it’s not yet live. I put something in a basket and went to checkout and got a ‘no payment methods’ error.

I suspect you’re right about it being a WIP. They talk about it here: Well known ALLO products are back again with new name but same team from India - General Forum - Audiophile Style

I’m going to wait a bit to see how that shakes out.

As long as manufacturers take their responsibilities with respect to kernel drivers, I’ll take care of the rest.

Yeah, the Pi2AES is supported.

Thanks very much for the info! I’ve been looking at the PI2AES because of all the outputs, and it’s very tempting.

Thanks for the link.

Sounds like they are truly back in business - great news.

I have a 1st gen Pi2AES, a DigiOne Signature, and a DigiOne - all work well with Ropieee and have worked with whatever DACs I’ve used.

Most modern DACs re-clock so I’m not sure the very tiny differences between then would be noticeable.

Can you clarify what you mean by “modern” dac? My current DAC is 9 years old. Is that modern? I dunno.

What DAC do you use?

ASR measured both the DigiOne and Signature. The DigiOne was very good. The Signature measured a touch better - although they are both so good it is unlikely you could hear the difference.

The maker of the Pi2AES published some measurements comparing his own 1st generation board with the DigiOne signature - the Allo was fractionally better.

Hmm…yeah, that would have been useful info, right?

I have a Metrum Musette. If you’re not familiar with it, it’s a NOS DAC. I believe it was Metrum’s least expensive DAC at the time I got it.

Google wasn’t my friend in this case.

My guess is a boutique NOS DAC from 2015/6 might not re-clock.

Someone here may know though.
