I am wondering if there are any best practices I am missing regarding art beyond covers to my albums. If Roon used Discogs and pulled down the art for the specific version it would be helpful otherwise I am selectively scanning my albums or saving some time by lifting some scans from Discogs when I am comfortable they are the exact match.
Scanning takes a lot of time if done in volume. I commend those I know who have had the discipline to scan their own actual cover and back and any key production pages during the time they tag and add an album to the library. Having pics of the actual item helps with identification and confidence in data integrity.
I like the “credits” in roon but given the limited hit I have on matching versions I don’t often trust the credits like Mastering that are version specific. When I tag the file myself or include a scan of credits in my folder I can validate.
in addition booklet scans are awesome! Roon makes it easy to read CD booklets if they are scanned at decent resolution. iPad control with booklet scans really shows off the vision of Roon…
Here are just two pages of a booklet with a lot of great info about the artist and production of Deluxe Edition. It makes me want to add more art!
I am sort of new to Roon, and do not as yet know or understand how one adds additional art work, and then gets same to display? Sounds wonderful, but I have not as yet discovered how to do so… Any insight into this would go a long way towards making a great weekend project!
If you add picture (i.e. JPEG or PDF) files to your song folder you can click on the cover in Roon and then click on arrow to right of cover pic to sequence to next picture.
If you have sub folders like /disc1 and /disc 2 then you could have /art folder as well with all the pics.
That is one draw back of plugging collection holes with albums from Tidal…no art beyond the cover…and not having the CD/SACD to consult
If Qobuz has albums with digital booklets I assume that provides similar functionality? I see some HiRez downloads listed as having digital booklets…seems like a good idea.
“Roon Ready” streamer/downloads would be cool. Booklets like a well packaged CD, credits well populated (seems that is done already) but mastering/source info would be nice (not a feature of downloads/streamers it seems).
I’m too new here to have much to offer other than to say I’ve scanned all the printed material that came with my CDs.
Was easy to get Roon to use my album covers and have it show my other artwork and pdfs.
I’m currently about 2/3 done doing a metadata grooming pass comparing what Roon has vs what I embedded in my albums. Once I finish, I’ll have a bunch of questions to ask, including some about artwork.
I received help on this last week, as I’m ripping some of my vinyl. Take pictures of front, back and any inserts on my Huawei P20 Pro, edit on the phone (straighten, crop to square), email and add from my mac. Takes seconds.
I would be interested in seeing some of the pics of records. I have played with a photo stand and getting the whiteness and squareness is not easy. How picky are you getting?
I also like scans of the CDs as well as art. Discs like “green arrows”, “black triangles” and “targets” are fun to see.
I scan the discs too. And I’m quite picky (OK, I’m anal about this sort of thing). Many discs are a real challenge to get a good scan. Reflective surfaces don’t work well on a flatbed scanner. I’ve thought about photographing, but you nailed it with the issues involved with that.
Thank you so much for the insight and screen shots you provide. I believe that I can do this as well, having learned the method(s) from last nights question and the post you so kindly included.
Not that fussed. I have far more invested in photography than audio, but did this quickly on my phone and kept the images quite small. Took seconds. Looks like I didn’t even take the album out the plastic sleeve.
Thanks! I like being able to read the text on those vintage jazz lps.
I like seeing pics of my actual record when I digitize them. I can do a good enough job with my iPhone but I have been trying to get them straight and square.
Pictures are especially needed to make sense out of box sets. There are a lot of boxes with full albums plus bonus tracks. Without pictures I just see the cover and 100+ tracks. By adding pictures I can see what tracks are from what albums and which tracks are bonus tracks. etc. I can pull the book off the shelf or search the internet but they way Roon handles boxes makes pictures a requirement for me.
I love this box and am adding more pictures with track info. They book is wonderful and well worth pulling off the shelf even with a few pictures in Roon.
As much as I like the cover of the box I need the place matts like above to follow the 8 CDs.
I can’t use pictures with my Tidal content so I shy away from boxes unless I like the mastering or they have bonus tracks (like this one). If there is a lot of info (a nice book) like this one then it’s an easy decision to just buy the box.
For boxes with just regular albums of the same recent mastering of the albums it’s more informative to just add the albums vs. box to my library. Sometimes those have the bonus tracks where budget boxes don’t.
