Anything about Playlists Discussion

I know there are some playlist-centric people out there, so I wanted to start a thread to share ideas and tips.

I have Roon and Tidal based playlists (all my main media is now streaming), I love that you can now edit Tidal playlists on Roon — game changer. I like Tidal based playlists so i can download them and use them on airplanes or when Wi-Fi is not streaming well.

Playlist naming - I use a number prefix (1.0, 2.0)… I like to sort alpha and have current “hot” playlists on the top. I use prefixes like a pseudo genre, more like a “mood” or social setting — cocktail party, fire pit, mellow background, working lofi, sleepy jazz, etc) — those aren’t the actual names but gives you and idea.

How that helps in another way — the Roon software shows either Roon playlists or Tidal (or Qobuz) playlists but not ALL together. If I search on that prefix (“1.0”), i see all the matches from Roon AND Tidal! bonus!

How do you use Playlists in Roon?

I have both Tidal and Qobuz with essentially no local files. I build most of my playlist using Qobuz links, then export them to Tidal using Soundiz. Of course, Tidal then syncs the Tidal version back into Roon. I also save a local copy of the Qobuz version. Therefore, I have three copies of every playlist.

I used Soundiiz a lot too…

  • Friends or other playlists from Spotify (“heart” them in Spotify for them to show up in your sounding)
  • I shazaam songs when I am out and about, they automatically added to Spotify playlist, then automatically synced to Tidal and then to Roon!
  • I scobble songs to Last.FM. Last.FM makes a Next 30 Songs for you playlist. I sync that to Tidal using soundiiz (not everyone realizes soundiiz can access Last.FM playlists)

Mostly Spotify to Tidal… Spotify does playlists way better than Tidal!

Some playlist names…
0.0 Everyday Songs 2025 492 tracks, 31 hours * TIDAL
0.0 Work / Mega Beats Chill [Roon] 3361 tracks, 179 hours
0.0 Spiritual / Journal in a Rising Day! [Roon] 82 tracks, 7 hours
0.0 Chill Cocktails and Wine Happy Hour [Roon] 456 tracks, 29 hours
0.0 Beautiful Slow Day on the River [Tidal] 434 tracks, 38 hours * TIDAL

I use Roon for playback and browsing. I use JRiver for cataloging and tagging. I create playlists in JRiver then all I need to to is right click on it, export it to a Playlist folder where Roon scans my music and the playlists popup.

Why do you need the Roon version (the one that is not Tidal and not Qobuz)?
