Helo Roon-Support-Team,

is there an „how to“ connect an apple super drive to roon rock installation on a proxmox vm on intel nuc?
If I try a usb-passthrough, the vm recognizes the cd-drive but cd-ripper status does not become green.
Everything else is running fine!

Thank you very much for support!
Best regards
Oliver

Describe your network setup

Roon Rock installation on proxmox vm on intel nuc hardware, everything ist fine, but cd-ripping option does not detect hardware

Sadly there is no support for Roon installations in application containers and/or virtual machines. Maybe the Proxmox documentation can help you figuring out how / if it is possible to hand a drive into the vm for ROCK to use – or another ROCK on Proxmox user over in Tinkering may know something?

Just out of interest:

  • Did you try and insert an audio CD into the drive to see if the ripping starts?
  • Where is Roon OS supposed to store the tracks?
Note: Only the (additional) internal drive and USB-Disks are supported according to the manual you already know about. Without a suitable storage location the built-in CD ripper might not work.

Just figured out how to get from the broken symbol in your post to the attached file:

You even underlined the reason why you can’t rip – and it has nothing to do with the CD drive (so far). Please add suitable storage space to your Proxmox VM and then try again.

PS: The consensus here on the forum seems to be to avoid the built-in simplified CD ripper and use your PC/Mac/laptop instead with a good ripping tool and metadata writer before you copy the files somewhere where Roon can see them. Just FYI.

Is the Super Drive on the same machine running Proxmox? If so, have you setup pass-through for the VM, so it has exclusive control of the device?

Hi mjw,
yes it is attatched to the same hardware, where Proxmox is running.
Passthrough to the VM I have just tried and a have still added the superdrive without errors, but it is not recognized by roon. Also the usb drive (usb stick) attached to proxmox does not appear, because I cannot mount it via prompt at roon installation

Oliver

It is, that is why “CD Ripper” shows for you on the configuration page.

That is your issue as the “CD Ripper” will not work without a location to rip to (storage to create files). If you can’t use USB storage, maybe just add a second HDD for that purpose to the VM?

Hey BlackJack,

that’s fine, thank you very much for your advice belonging the storage!
I should read the underlined text in detail next time

By the way…CD-Ripper is “green” now. I have mounted the usb-stick directly in PVE an after that I passthrough the device, that works.

But…now if I insert an audio-CD in my Apple SuperDrive it’s slots in, but the ripping process does not start, even if I refresh the website of my roon rock.

Do you perhaps have another tip, how I can solve this issue?
The CD-Drive is also passed through to the VM

Regards Oliver

I assume that you have added the USB-stick (or whatever storage location you want to use) as a “Watched Folder” in Roon, so that Roon knows where to put the ripped files?

Data CDs, DVDs, Blu-Rays, and M-Discs are not supported.

Die eingelegte CD muss natürlich unterstützt sein.
