Archimago's musings on ethernet cables and audio

Of course, and the reason that 2+2 ≠ 4 will be explained using pseudoscientific hyperbolic audiophool mumbo jumbo…

I feel that, for reasons of accuracy, I should also state the following:

2+2=11 (when using the ternary numeral system). :grinning:

but if we can get 2+2 = 4 just long enought to apply some GEOMETRY STABILIZING SOLID HIGH-DENSITY POLYETHYLENE INSULATION… that just may hold it all together.

Token ring! There’s a phrase I haven’t heard since the 90s. Good times.

2+2=4 but only if 4 identifies as a number then a whole number and finally as the whole number known as 4.

All joking aside since I joined this community over 2 years ago when I started using Roon I’ve always wondered when the objective Roon users would rise up against all the subjective audiophile beliefs that seem to fill this community. Since Roon has been and continues to be marketed primarily to audiophiles this tension will only get worse since there are lots of objective Roon (my term for the “non-audiophiles”) users mixed in with the kool-aide drinking audiophiles. As a reformed audiophile (Hi! I’m Ralph and I’m an audiophile.) I can say will a high degree of certainty that these threads, filled as they are with seemingly endless back and forth will not move the needle.

Audiophiles will never listen with an open mind, let alone do double blind tests, since the truth is not what concerns them. Audiophile dogma is their guiding light and anything that challenges that dogma is not allowed. I’m way over simplifying since there are many audiophile who can carefully hide the falsehoods with half truths and tortured logic.

For example the audiophile numbers game where numbers are important except when the numbers challenge some dogma. 24bit is better than 16bit and 192kHz is better than 44.1kHz but 0.1 THD is not better than 0.001 THD when tubes are involved since tubes sound better. So audiophiles like to use numbers except when they don’t.

Then there are the analog to digital audiophile conversions. Analog had wow and flutter which was converted to the jitter bogeyman. Analog had hiss which was converted to digital noise. In analog wires and cable were given outsized importance and so audiophile digital cables were born.

What many audiophiles fail to understand is that the objective listeners don’t toss aside all the audiophile dogma but rather just the ones that make no scientific sense. There are many manufacturers of high end audio equipment that produce well made great sounding and reasonably priced equipment, just as there those manufacturers that deal in audiophile snake oil. Sometimes careful listening means truthful listening - hearing through the dogma and finding the truth.

As I’ve stated in many Roon community posts over the past 2+ years my judgement cannot be trusted because I dare to listen to Tidal’s AAC files and find them to sound very good, in spite of Roon labeling them “low quality”.

2 + 2 = 100

No, 10 + 10 = 100

It is worth noting that the standard for analogue line level connections is 600 Ohm input to output impedance using a differential signal, just as it’s done in studio applications.

1 kOhm to 47 kOhm or thereabouts actually isn’t proper source to sink termination and as such prone to signal degradation, especially when used with some exotic high end cable contraptions - which is often called component matching in the high-end audio world.

Sorry, i was talking about RCA-phono single-ended connections, not balanced XLR. Those were always the standard values on most of the hi-fi components I’ve come across.

Obviously, when we’re talking about balanced line level, then it’s 600 ohms as you stated.

Hahaha sums up a lot! :joy:

Haven’t read all the reply’s here, but one of my favourites is a direction on cables!

Funny how the direction of the cable is always clearly indicated but left and right is often very hard to see.

Helpful hint:
If you install network cables in the wrong “direction” then all the noise stays in the network switch and you can just simply clear the noise from switch with some compressed air.

We live in a world of noise. You could classify audio as noise

Edit: wanted noise: audio, unwanted noise: all else! And as said before, easily measurable.

It’s like €€€ nitrogen in car tires… BuT tHe MoleCuLes ArE biGgeR thAn OxYGen!

…meanwhile on planet Earth the atmosphere is 78% nitrogen…

Interestingly, oxygen permeates rubber 3-4 times faster than nitrogen, so even by using air and topping up regularly you still end up with predominantly nitrogen in your tyres…

This. Thanks Graeme!

If you really want your tyres to stay inflated, use argon!

You are very close to letting the cat, or should I say air, out of the bag before the official launch on April 1st. Stay tuned for more details.

I think that has more to do with less change in pressure when tires go from hot to cold. Might be more beneficial on a track than normal everyday driving.

“Freezing to minus 310 degrees using close but indirect contact with liquid Nitrogen, also known as LN2, and EXTREMELY slowly bringing up to the room temperature (72 hours cycle) removes both mechanical and thermal stress from the materials, and it looks like everyone begins to acknowledge that it does make a (positive) sonic difference via helping the materials to come to a ‘relaxed state’ … Beware of pseudo Cryo-Claims.”
