Audio dropouts in living room speaker via Nvidia Shield and Chromecast (ref#0Q9I44)

I’m impressed you guys haven’t given up yet, thank you!

Unplugged both Satellites, still multiple audio dropouts within a single song on the Nvidia shield.

Curious, which devices are you using?

I did more testing today.

I know the Cambridge AXN10 works via RAAT flawlessly. However, with the Cambridge Audio AXN10, I used Chromecast and I got zero audio dropouts as well. It’s connected to the Samsung Q90R via optical cable. At the same time, I’m using the Nvidia shield connected to the LG C7 OLED TV as a Roon “Display”. Over 30 minutes and no dropouts.

Tested the Nvidia shield again today, over Chromecast, with same list of music as above test, and within a single song, I got multiple audio dropouts, not usable. It’s connected to the Samsung Q90R via HDMI.

I previously tested a Google 4K TV streamer via Chromecast and I got the same audio dropouts

As an aside, yesterday I tested my LG G7 TV with built in Chromecast, connected to a Samsung Q990C via HDMI, and I got no audio dropouts for over 30 minutes.

My 5 Ghz bands are on a separate channel than all wifi networks around me.

… I’m narrowing it down to perhaps the Nvidia shield and Chromecast. The Google 4K streamer is similar to the Nvidia shield and I got similar audio dropouts. I tried to adjust the settings on the Nvidia shield, extensively, without success.

Hey @roon.twine803,

We agree in that the issue seems to be around the Nvidia shield and Chromecast - we have a ticket in our queue for your issue that we’re bringing to our development call this week that should help us move forward with some next steps in troubleshooting.

We’ll follow up with additional information once we’re able to discuss your case - thank you for your patience in the meantime!

Hey @roon.twine803,

A few additional questions from our developers (and thank you for your long standing patience so far):

  1. Do different file formats over chromecast effect the dropout?

  2. Do you experience any dropouts using different media source outside of Roon using Chromecast?

Hi @C_T,

As mentioned earlier, I’d recommend starting your own support thread so we can better troubleshoot your specific setup - you can do so here:

Thank you!

No. I tried mp3 vs flac, etc, and no difference. No difference in streaming Qobuz vs local files

No. No issues there.

Hi @roon.twine803,

Is @C_T another community account you have and perhaps use by mistake? We may be able to combine them if so.

Does your Nvida Shield by chance have an onboard ethernet port? If so, another area of troubleshooting worth testing could be to try out a Google Ethernet Adapter for Chromecast, and see if you experience the same dropouts, since these adapters are relatively inexpensive (around $15), this is a cost-effective way to troubleshoot without making larger changes to your setup.

If the Shield’s onboard Ethernet port has any faults or compatibility issues, using an external adapter could confirm whether the problem is specific to that port.

Let me know if this may be something you’d be willing to try out!
