@mackid1993, it’s on our list but we cannot make any estimates at this point since we have not been able to reliably reproduce this issue. Hopefully, we are going to make some progress after the playlist improvement release finally settles down.
Sorry.

For now I cleared app data and re-setup ARC hoping that maybe that will help.
FWIW I also experience this fairly consistently on my S22 running Android 14 when on cellular. ARC accounts for most of my battery use when ostensibly unused in the background.
I’m getting ready to take ARC off my phone and just use Tidal. This is a major issue and it needs to get addressed.
I’ve gone ahead and set ARC’s battery usage to “Restricted” for now because I can’t take this anymore especially with a product I spent $699 on.
I’m beginning to regret springing for lifetime because it seems many bugs that are reported aren’t getting addressed.
So far setting battery usage to Restricted has made a huge difference. @ivan Perhaps this can help you guys debug.
I just updated my phone to Android 14 QPR2 (March 2024 update) and it seems the way Android handles battery optimization was changed.
The settings have been simplified.
Perhaps this was hard to reproduce for the Roon team as it was an issue on the Android side and not the Roon side.
Is anyone else having this issue running Android 14 too?
So it looks like this Allow background usage setting is now on by default in a new install of ARC. I really think this issue is the way ARC interacts with battery optimization in Android. It seems to run in the background when the process should really be automatically killed by the OS when it’s no longer streaming audio. @ivan
Smart downloads may mean that it can’t sleep in the background.
Besides, I always enabled background battery usage on Android (though not 14) in older ARC versions, because it allowed manual downloads to continue in the background, and I ran with this setting for months without any battery draining issues. So something seems to have changed there.
Valid point, something is broken.
I’ll try running my old phone with this setting and report back. (I switched to iPhone in the meantime as my regular phone)
On an older phone you’ll want to set it to restricted.
But your issue is when it’s not restricted, and I want to compare the same setting on an older Android. Like I said, I ran it withy background batter usage allowed most of the time and never had an issue with it.
Hi @mackid1993 ! Can I ask you to do the following:
- stop playing/streaming in ARC (if it’s active)
- send ARC to the background
- fully charge the battery
- don’t use ARC 24 or even more hours
- check: Settings → Apps → Roon ARC → Usage → Battery
Please, let us know what you see there.
Thanks!
@mackid1993 what were your settings before changing to Restricted? Unrestricted or Optimized?
I’m charging up my phone right now. I’ll start this test right now however I will have to charge my phone overnight because ARC will absolutely kill my battery and I won’t have a phone to use. 24 hours is not possible. I can probably do 8 hours or so and let you know what the usage was. ARC really uses that much power!! Please let me know if that timeframe is acceptable. I do need to be able to use my phone.
I was set to optimized.
@oleh I’m on a Pixel 6 Pro, so it will only show the usage since the last full charge. Samsung devices may be a little different. So the test you are asking me to do wouldn’t be possible as my phone won’t make it 24 hours with ARC in the background and will have to be recharged.
@oleh My phone is fully charged and I’m starting the drain right now if you want to turn on your diagnostics. Thanks!
So far ARC isn’t draining my phone as fast as before. I’m not sure if this is due to the March 2024 QRP2 Android 14 update I installed on Sunday or if a change was made on the Roon side?
