B231 High Idle Battery Usage on Android 14

@oleh I recently installed the March 2024 update on my Pixel 6 Pro which seems to change how battery optimization works. It’s a major Pixel feature drop.

I’m not sure if this fixed it or if you guys did something but I didn’t have the excessive drain.

The battery optimization settings look like this in the new update:

The optimization to choose unrestricted, optimized or restricted has been removed.

This was my usage from 3 PM yesterday to 11 am today. ARC did quit in the background 3 times and I had to reopen it to continue the test.

I’m not sure what resolved this, hopefully you know but it seems to be fixed either by you guys or Google.

Hi @mackid1993! That’s excellent news. Thanks.

This issue is still occurring on two fully patched (AP1A.240305.019.A1) Pixel 7s. ARC accounts for 20-30% of our battery drain, even when unused. This is unacceptable for a music application. Happy to send debug logs etc.

@oleh This happened again today. I listened to ARC for less than an hour in the car. This was my usage.

Only a few hours later. I haven’t used ARC since 5PM and hardly used my phone.

Hello,

I do also have a battery drain issue.
Device is a Pixel 6 with the latest Android 14 build AP1A.240405.002
App is roon ARC earlyaccess build 264.
Battery settings for ARC are “Allow background usage: Optimised”.
Smart downloads are disabled.

I haven’t used roon in the past 22 hours at all, yet:

Yeah it’s clear this is an ongoing issue. I hope @Early_Access will give it some attention as it seems like many people are seeing this.

This is still very much an active issue on B286. I’m really surprised we haven’t gotten any movement on this all year.

It seems that the nearby devices permission may have something to do with this drain. Disabling the permission may have helped, however it’s hard to tell. I initially saw a difference but it’s still inconsistent.

Edit: tested further. definitely seeing a difference. @Early_Access maybe someone can look into this possibility.

Just adding my thoughts here to give another example of this issue.

I have a Pixel 8 Pro and I see the same thing with ARC using more battery than other apps. My phone may get a little warm when using ARC, but nothing drastic. I may need to charge a bit more frequently when using ARC, but in general in my use case it doesn’t become a problem.

One observation I’ve made, and I’m not certain if this has been pointed out elsewhere, but for example let’s say my phone reports ARC has used 30% battery since the last full recharge. This doesn’t mean that ARC has used 30% of the full capacity of the battery. Even with ARC using 30%, the battery might be 90% full. In this scenario, I believe ARC has used 30% of the 10% of the battery actually consumed. That’s still much higher than other apps… and once 99% of the battery is drained, if ARC is still using 30% mostly in the background, that still seems significant.

I typically use ARC with the Beta USB driver enabled if that makes any difference.

@mackid1993, I’ll try disabling the nearby apps permission to see if that makes any difference for me. I do have Pixel Buds Pro connected to the phone, but I don’t use them with ARC. I saw your comment in another thread and I’m also wondering if the Pixel 9 Pro / Pro XL will be any better.

My issue is I won’t be using ARC at all. It’s just idle and my phone will drain a huge amount with the screen off, not using my phone and it just sitting on my desk after a listening session. I’ve gone from the 80s into the 60s with my phone doing nothing because ARC won’t let Android stop it from running. After disabling nearby devices after a little while it seems so far that the app will stop running in the background. It seems like it’s constantly pinging my Pixel buds or my Pixel watch while its idle.

@connor had the solution: [ARC] Idle Battery Drain Issue on Android 14 (ref#36KAR0) - #2 by connor

There’s a high GPU usage bug on the now playing screen and queue screen. I used ARC today idling on a library screen with the player minimized and I didn’t have any runaway drain. Hopefully this can help someone until we see a patch for this.
