Description of Issue

Bonjour,

It can be done, but requires a good quality USB stick (a Roon Backup consists of thousands of small files and folders, and a poor quality USB stick can choke on this).

Format the USB stick as EXT4 or exFAT

I had a very good quality Samsung thumb drive fail after several months worth of backups while permanently connected. The drives get hot. Back up twice. Once to a permanently connected drive and a manual backup monthly to a drive not permanently connected. Backing up to a folder in a NAS is also a good call.

I think a proper USB SSD is preferable to a stick - I use an m.2 SSD in a USB housing, and it has worked for almost 5 years now…

I use a folder on a 5tb WD passport , the rest is content , no issues so far

My NUC ROCK used to eat USB sticks constantly. I don’t use them anymore, not should anyone else, no matter the quality/brand.

I have had a USB thumb drive plugged into the back of mine for more than a year. Last week I moved all my gear and upon turning everything back on for the first time, Roon could not detect my Nucleus. I tried multiple reboots of it, re-installed Roon Remote on my iPad and still no luck. I opened Roon Remote on my iPhone and it gave me a message stating the system was corrupted and that I needed to restore from a backup. Luckily it was able to see the thumb drive and there was a backup from the previous day. It took a long time but it all worked out.

USB thumb drives are really best for just quick easy transfer of files etc from one location to another.
I would not trust one to be a permanent back up drive all in its own.
As @Geoff_Coupe said, a USB SSD is your better option, does not take up much more room and can still be tucked behind out of the way and sight.

I backup to two separate drives and a Nas on differing schedule’s.
Better safe than sorry.
