4 albums I enjoyed a lot this year:
Hard to pick 1 so I’ll name a few:
Typhoon by Royal Blood
If I Cant Have Love I Want Power by Halsey
Memory Device by Baba Ali
Sounds of Tokyo-To Future by 2 Mello
Ordinary Life by We Are the Union
SKA DREAM by Jeff Rosenstock
I would say this 4th favorite album was also my most anticipated release of 2021. Do I consider it the “best”? Probably not. But LG have never disappointed me yet.
My Top 5 from 2021 (in alphabetical order)
Nice to get these hints from you. This way we don’t miss you so much. For me 5 bull’s-eyes and one album I don’t appreciate (Sounds of Tokyo-To Future).
I just got this in my ears…
It’s great. IMO, a really accomplished and mature album, not only in relative terms for her, but in absolute terms.
This was already posted by @anon89593805 earlier but I have to solidify the selection as a favourite of 2021. I was blown away hearing this because of a track played on some television series my kids were watching. 5th in my list, but of no particular order.
Definitely needs a wider audience. Excellent album
Not on the level of Lost In A Dream or A Deeper Understanding, but its the best in a down year.
And here is a vote for live album/streaming event of the year.
I honestly can’t believe this guy has been doing his musical craft for over 40 years. And it’s all near-perfection. 6th (inpo) album on my favourites list.
This collaboration between Sufjan Stevens and Angelo De Augustine is really special. The review says it ends up being not quite as good as either individually, but I disagree-I think they bring out good things from each other because they make ‘similar’ music, rather than reduce one another’s potency.
The cover artwork is truly terrible though!
Back to Oz is in a chance with the coveted Michael’s track of the year award for 2021.
I’m one of 96 people on a Top Ten Albums mail trail.
This is my top ten for the list.
Bright Magic - Public Service Broadcasting
Less BBC voice sampling and more analogue sweeping synths. A bit too much Bladerunner in parts but a nice progression in style.
Californian Soil - London Grammar
Swoopy pop
As the Love Continues - Mogwai
Mogwai keep on sounding like Mogwai but a bit different each time
Dark In Here - The Mountain Goats
Even better than my favourite album of 2020 Getting Into Knives.
I Don’t Live Here Anymore - The War On Drugs
Boppy Pop with a distinctive voice
We Will Always Love you - The Avalanches
Songs based, loosely, on the Golden Record (Voyager Interstellar Message Project) blasted off into space.
CARNAGE - Nick Cave and Warren Ellis
Stripped down Cage.
The Coral - Coral Island
Popppity pop pop
Jesse Brewster - The Lonely Pines
Americana
OK Human - Weezer
Lyrics encouraging listening to 1984 on audible rather than binging on Zombie hordes does it for me.
Okay here’s the “inpo” 7th on my 10 favourites list. For soundtracks this captures the Dune atmosphere perfectly.
